Has anyone else seen the Custom Maz GT on E-Bay? It has M.V. and Drive controls added in the front and a 1/2 power switch on the back. From the write-up on the thread it looks like the mods were done by the Doc himself. Anyone else have this done that can shed some light on the tone with the mods? How much for the mods? I owned one awhile back and if I would have know this was available I would never have sold my blondie!
The GT was my favorite Z and if I can get this done I will be on the hunt for one real soon!

wow,, i guess this was the forerunner of the coming monza with a master volume (maybe i heard wrong),, lessee a mazerati gt with a half power switch, and a gain control and a master volume. is it too hard to produce? you wonder why it was not marketed like this at first. when i bought my mazerati gt and had had the choice of the standard or one that had a master volume i would probably have purchased the master volume, the half power switch would not have been an issue though...

I'm guessing it is cost and complexity - the amp was $1,699 as it was - add another couple hundred bucks for those mods and now you have another $2000 amp playing in basically the same spot as a couple other Zs. Just my guess though.

The GT has some Trainwreck heritage in it, and I am guessing that these added features aren't really consistent with the whole "Less is More" philosophy.

All very good points! Perhaps Doc might be willing to add a "custom options list" to his amps when released. I bought my GT used at a smoken deal so the additional cost would have been a no brainer for me at the time. I know Doc puts his heart and ears into fulfilling his vision when he designs an amp but the simple fact remains; tone junkies are tone junkies and most of us just can't help ourselves.

Has anyone checked with the Doc that it is an authentic Z?
Just asking....

Yes, I sent an email to Brent to see if the mods could be performed, how much and how long. He said the mods would cost between $300-$400 with a down time of about 2 weeks

^^^ Cool! Was just worried as I don't like to see people do clones and then "brand" the product as an original, as this guy has done. Should be an interesting buy for someone ;D

Are you guys talking about the one in Virginia, title "Dr Z Custom Shop Mazerati GT Amp Head Rare One of Kind"? If so, this one's been listed locally (I live near where this is being sold). I showed Brent a CL listing and photo and he's pretty sure it was a legit GT that they did indeed do a MV mod on it.
I have a little heartburn with the way the guy's been advertising it locally. i.e. "Custom Shop" and a few other adjectives, but outside of that I think he's represented it fairly well and the guy seems willing to "deal".

Whhooooahhh. Dopey me. I just looked at Pete's video. So I went back and looked at the Ebay listing and the CL listing.
Am I wrong? The GT has Volume, Tone. That's it. This one listed has a master, tone, volume and drive!
Thanks Peter for posting the video. I should have paid closer attention to it!
Please, next time, YELL!: "HEY DUMBASS, I THINK THAT ONE IS A FAKE!" Thanks for saving me from a big mistake! I owe you one!

Hey man, if you feel the need for a change and want to trade out of the Maz GT let me know. I have an older Rt66 on our BST forum I am looking to sell or trade. Although I prefer El 34's I loved the Maz GT when I had one. I was in contact with the seller and was trying to work out a trade but he wanted a Stangray. Let me know if you change direction. Merks

Hey Merks. I think this is a "keeper"! I had a RT 66, while a nice amp, it didn't "speak" to me. (I know, I might need some counseling to deal with those voices!)
Sorry to have stepped on your toes. Mike lives just down the road from me and it was an easy swap. I think we were both very happy with the deal!
Played that sucker for 2 hours yesterday. Wow. I never really "learned" how to use the guitar volume and tones to manipulate the sound. With this amp: It's majic. Though the cleans are not Ray or Maz cleans, I could definitely see me kicking OD pedals off my board and just use V/T on the guitar!
In fact, gonna audition for a band tomorrow night and I can't wait to use the GT for that! Might try to grab some videos and post them.

Hey Greg, no problem and you didn't step on my toes my friend you just happened to have the goods he wanted and I didn't:<) Yea, I never really like working the volume on my guitar with most amps as I thought it always lowered the volume and darkened the highs to much to get the clean I wanted but the Maz GT reacts completely different! Cleans up nicely, maintains the volume and retains the highs. Fantastic amp! Going to try and sell my Rt66 and pick up a used GT then send it to the good doctor to have it modified like yours. Thanks and enjoy HIS music! Merks

I was playing again tonight and really, REALLY, got into using the guitar volume!
5-7 a nice spot for the cleans. 7-10 and the GT turns mean! (In a great way!)
Did hear a slight roll-off of the highs. Put in a new set of Fralins in my 50th Ann Am Deluxe Strat. (+10 for these PUPS!) Held their tone down to about 5'ish. Not sure I'd mod it to prevent treble bleed as it wasn't too obvious.
7 seemed to be right at the point where clean-hot happens. Volume did not seem to change too much. 5 was really clean and chimey, but in a band setting might drop the volume a little too much. (Volume pedal might take care of this).
Anyway. Gonna take the amp and a tuner to an audition Tuesday night. Just work the volume and see what happens! (the spot is mine if I want it, just not the smartest thing to do-change up your techniques for an audition!)

Greg, How'd the audition go? So-so. Been a while since I've played with folks. And I did a cardinal sin---I was so excited about playing the GT. I had also recently swapped out the stock SCNs on my 50Ann Am Dlx Strat with Fralin Vintage hots. Group I was trying out for was somewhat on the "sedate" side. Between the GT and the Fralins, I was "driving" an Indy Race car through a small mountain town! Wasn't a good match! But it was fun when I got to let this pair rip! Drummer, bass player, sax player and female singer. Of those folks, the drummer "got it"! But definitely needed to spend a little more time working the "gas pedal" and the "brakes" on these 2! Definitely can get clean and subtle and then "fire-breathing", but it sure takes a delicate balance! Gonna spend a little more time getting the feel of these, but it will definitely be worth the extra work. Pro players could easily have handled this beast, but being a part time hack, it'll take me a little longer! But it'll be worth it! I never really learned how to "play" the guitar volume and tone controls. With the GT, at least for me, that will be the secret to unlocking all of its goodies!

Oh yes indeed - Guitar Volume is the secret "hidden" tool of the pro player, as far as I can see. In my many years of playing, most non-pros max the GV and use pedals to alter tone/drive/volume etc., yet every pro I watched either in person or on video, is working away at their GV all the time. The penny dropped (very slowly!) when I got my first Z amp - my first "real" amp IMO - and figured out the GV thing. It makes SUCH a huge difference! You can just sit "on the edge" all night and gain total control over your sound. It's great! ;D Just my .02 and YMMV.

It was a Marshall DSL 100 head. I could use the lower gain side for everything and just use my GV to give me cleans and crunch. I never liked the "lead" side anyway. Way too compressed. I learned a lot w/ that amp. The GT works really, really well using the GV. Pretty nice EL-84 cleans to all-out crazy saturated stuff w/ a roll of the GV. In my opinion (at least for me), it's the best amp the Doc makes.

I got back into player guitar about 6-7 years after a mighty long down-time. I've intellectually understood the guitar volume technique for a while. But when I got the GT, man did it become so painfully obvious! Seeing Buddy at Z Fest in June, it really started sinking in as to how powerfull of a (simple!) technique this really is! That's why I ain't a pro! Takes too long for the good stuff to sink into my thick head. But dang this amp SERIOUSLY calls for a guitar, a guitar chord, and using the guitar volume knob! Lesson learned!

Seems like most of Doc's amps can make great tonal changes using the volume knob!

How much was this modded GT? What was the story behind it? Having Volume, Gain, Master, Tone and a 1/2 power seems odd. Was it a prototype?
What are current GT's going for?

Post by Jaguarguy (Mike) on Oct 3, 2013 13:15:05 GMT -7
Not a prototype - It would have been a one-off mod for a customer so no list price. I figure MV mod about $150 (that 's what it is on Monza and what I paid for my Maz GT MV mod) and another $150 probably for extra 1/2 power switch and gain switch. Greg's similar to this just went for about $1,100-$1,200 (can't remember which) so the ebay price is not that bad. I really like my MV mod - makes it more usable. FWIW - If I didn't have mine I would be after this one.
