Howdy,
On paper, the 'Ray and the new Z Wreck appear to have more than a little in common: 6BQ5s, 30 watts, minimal knobs.. Have any of you played or own both? What differences do you hear?

I don't have one but based on clips I have heard one part is the range of clean and dirty . I almost never hear any clips of the Ray dirty without a pedal.

The ray will stay cleaner much futher up the volume dial. The Zwreck is built to break up as you start to crank it, and it doesn't take a lot of volume for it to start to get a little dirty. The ray will stay clean far longer. Even in the 2:00 range it isn't very dirty. I notice some hair on the notes and the overall tone becoming thicker with a little natural compression to the notes. I wouldn't call it dirty though. The Wreck will get dirty. There are some Dave Baker clips on the Z website that do a nice job of demoing these two amps.

You can run a 5751 or lower 12A_7 type tube in V1 to lower the gain on the Zwreck but this reduces the volume just a little.
The Stangray uses the EF86 preamp tube and the clean head room on it is so good. Get both and run dual rig.

I had the tone up just a bit too much and it sounds mushy, but you can hear how much gain is (or isn't) on tap at full volume with a Telecaster with Lindy Fralin Blues Special single coil pickups. soundcloud.com/tele_jas/ray-volume-differencesAnd here's a clip pushing the front end with a clean boost.... This was a fun demo to play soundcloud.com/tele_jas/ray-with-boostHope this helps some? Jason

WHAT AN AWESOME THREAD. Having played a Wreck live and being fortunate to own the Ray. I would have to say. The same the wreck gives up the goods faster. However I used the wreck w ith a Gold GH-30 2x12 setup it was killer. Playing mostly rock tones it was easily pushed into marshall territory and with the strat it was clean enough for country tones. I love the mids the rays EF-86 acheives and i mostly use pushed meaning the timmy stays on always with just a hjnt of hair on the strings. The ray is loud. I never get to run it past noon . Both amps are IMHO VERY VERY CLOSE IN TONES BUT DIFFERENT AT THE SAME TIME. I WONT BE SELLING MY RAY FOR ONE BUT. A WRECK IS ON THE WISH LIST. THE RAY RULES!!!!!!
