My air Brake has a weird electric plastic smell when in use. Has anyone else had this happen? It seems to be working fine just odd. I know it's holding back some major power so as long as it doesn't catch fire I'm ok with it. Update: I opened and cleaned thoroughly with DeoxIt. Put it back together moved to a different spot so more air can get to it. Rocked out for a bit and the smell was minimal at best. It does get hot so putting it on it's side helps dissipate the heat. Thanks for the replies everyone.

How much power are you soaking up with it? And are you using it on Bedroom mode or not-bedroom mode?

I use the bedroom setting most often and when my ears get use to that I lessen the attenuation setting to three or four. I'm at about three o clock volume with my Mazerati. The smell fills the room after about five minutes of use.

My air break would glow bright red internally after I got done using her for about 30-40 mins..

Hm. I used to play my SRZ-65 wide open into my Airbrake for three full sets, and although the chassis got warm to the touch, it never got hot enough to smell. You should be able to play the Mazerati on there all day long.

I emailed Mike Zaite back in 2004 about seeing red hot parts on my Z-Brake between the backplate cover and the housing. At the time I was running a Maz 38 with the volume maxed and the brake on bedroom setting. I can't find the email anymore, but he assured me everything was fine and that some of the internal parts get pretty hot soaking up all that energy. Makes sense from a physics point of view.
I don't remember any particular strange odors coming from the brake other than something that smelled like it was hot. If you think there is a problem you could open the back and see if anything looks unusually burnt. There aren't all that many parts to a Brake. Or you could talk to the Doc and let him take a look.

Hopefully everything is ok. I'm sure if there are melted parts or wiring you won't be able miss them. Good luck.

I ended up cutting a hole on the side and I slide a piece of bacon in there prior to each gig. Don't forget to remove it if you're not going to use it for a couple of daze.
