I have a Z28 with an airbrake but at home it is still often too loud and I am believing that the JR with its lower power and master volume will do the trick --- do you agree with that?. Do you all think an RXJR would make me happy considering I love my Z28? I play a tele or p90's Les Paul mostly with and a 'bucker occasionally. I am mostly playing country/country rock stuff and my son would use it for blues and rock stuff too. I have played or owned a Maz 18, Remedy, Ghia and Stang Ray before and the Z28 was a keeper, the Ray I loved but it was too much amp and the others just were not right (but all very good!) with the Maz being quite good IMO.
Thanks and I appreciate you and your feedback!

Man, tough call on that. I think the Z28 has some serious magic...but, I really dig 6L6 tubes. The RXJR isn't going to have a 'similar' tone if your ears are used to the Z28. More Voxy/Marshall mixed IMO.
The RXJR does have a great MV and it would work great for your application. However, it can be a pretty loud 18 watts. Don't let that number fool you. I have owned many Z's including the Z28 and RXJR and both have their strong suits.
Try to audition one if you can before selling the 28.

I am fairly new to the forum and don't have the vast knowledge of Dr. Z amps that some of these guys do but I have owned several Z's in my time. Stangray, RXES, Maz 38SR, Maz 18NR, Mazerati, and now the RXJR. I play the exact same Country/Rock style you play and of all those amps I believe the RXJR is by far superior in tone. I have not owned a Z28 but have played through one and they are right. It is a slightly different tone, but in my opinion all of the Z amps share a certain characteristic in their tone. Will it be the same as the Z28...No but I think it is much better. The Z28 leans more towards a Fender Deluxe on steroids and the RXJR is more like a Vox AC 30 meets a Plexi Marshall but at much more manageable volume levels. The RXJR is very versatile and is more percussive than most Z amps. It can go from clean and chimey to gritty twang or chimey grit to woodsy/bluesy overdriven tones all by manipulating the EQ and Volume controls. Great MV and EQ section with rich harmonics and dynamic response...sounds much bigger than it is at 18 watts but the MV works so well you can achieve these tones at levels far lower than that of the Z28.

If the Maz is the ultimate Strat amp then for me the Rxjr is the ultimate Telly amp. There is not a bad Telly sound in the thing. Remember Paisley was in on the design for the big Rx. It took me awhile to get it to mate with my humbucker guitars but we are in harmony now. The overdose is also way cool and gives the amp a different feel when it is on. I use it more to change the characteristic of the amp than as a lead boost. And it is different than a Z28. It would be hard for me to get one to impersonate the other.

I own a Z-28 and I love the tone and sound. That said, my #1 is my RxES. Just too cool for school. Country, Classic Rock, Oldies and Blues - all coaxed out of the RxES. And I don't even get a chance to really open it up. I believe that you'll really like the Jr.

You couldn't get any different than those two amps. The Z28 is a Fendery fixed-bias amp with moderate percussiveness relative to other Z's, that gets kind of Marshally when cranked. The RxJr is a very percussive amp with lots of Vox DNA, a tone stack that can get a *lot* of highs, and more high mid clarity than the Z28. Saying "I love the Z28, will I love the RxJr too" is like saying "I love my Toyota Tundra, will I love the Camry too?" Basically I agree with tdhice22's post above The RxJr is a great Tele amp, no doubt. To my ears it sounds great with a Mullard EF86 through Blues. If you liked the Ray the RxJr is in that same ballpark with less overall volume.

I liked the Z28, but loved the RxJr for it's clean/cleanish break up thing with a single blue.
You can also boost it with the OverDose or hit the front end with a clean boost for two different boosting effects. That is a really cool trick that the RxJr does.
