I found out about 15 or 20 years ago that the better the amp, the less you have to tweak. That happened to be when I started using a non-master volume Marshall and then 1950s Tweed Bassmans. Those classic amps always sound good with just the tiniest tweak if any. Zs amps are like that too. A sure sign of what will be classic amps.

And it's gonna take another 40 for us to figure that out! Geez, if I had the money I've spent on guitars, amps, and other equipment in the last 40, I could retire and move to Florida where dock66 lives and buy the entire Dr Z line! You've it all figured out Don. ;D ;D JB

Yea yea, I know we've heard that before. But seriously, I've decided to go with two boards, one for my Classic Rock/Electric Blues/everything else style gigs, and one for strictly minimalistic style Blues gigs. The Blues board will only have an OD, a Trem (love Trem), and a Tuner. I'm finding that the less that comes between me and the amp the better, it's more inspirational. Strictly old school!! I agree Lefty. For my covertune band I have a rather extensive board. For blues it's pretty basic. Tuner>AC Boost>EBS Dynoverb.

It's funny, but I'm in the middle of building a "big" board and a small take to jams board. The big board will have > 10 effects and be set up for 2 amps and the small board will be a one amp <= 5 pedals small format. I'm not sure which I'll use more. Lazyness dictates the smaller one. But I occasionally like the wierd sounds like a WHammy Pedal and Brian May pedal. So you never know.

I combat actual size by using 2 PT. Jr's and populating as I see fit.

It kind of almost sucks, but i find with a REALLY great amp, i have a hard time getting away from just the guitar into amp!! It even becomes the begining of the comprimise mentality for me to work in nothing other than an O/D! I normaly play with just an O/D, and literaly have to avoid plugging straight in sometimes so i dont get "hooked" on that direct connection sound/feeling. Fortunately i think some of that is mitigated on stage, where such subtlety's are largely lost, but none the less, i'm solidly in the less is more camp!!

But I occasionally like the wierd sounds like a WHammy Pedal and Brian May pedal. So you never know. It's nice to have a small board for quick set ups and tear downs (here in northern Illinois I've had occasions to drive two hours through blinding snow, arriving 4 songs into a set and getting up and running by the time the 6th song is finished, thanks to smaller boards) like summer multi band festival gigs or postage stamp sized stages, but there are also times when you like to have all the stops available to pull out. I have one small board for my Ghia and one for my Maz, wired up for the effects loop, so it's all dependent upon the size of the room. And in a pinch I can pull a few cables and use either board with either amp. That said, sometimes I wish my ears would accept simplicity. If I was in a band playing all originals, or playing strictly blues, I could probably get away with a boost, a medium gain OD, and a tuner. With the situation I'm in now it just isn't feasible though.

I have a handful of gain devices (fuzzes, treble boosters, overdrives) and other things, but for a while now all I've used is just a BB preamp. Sounds great!
