For a long time, I used pedals for bedroom volume on a peavey classic 50.
When I got the route, bedroom volumes improved a bit. I especially loved the strong bass.
When I finally used the route live, I find the pedal characteristics are less pronounced and the route characteristics control the pedal's sound more than the other way around.
My guess is this is normal, any comments?
I almost feel like a louder cleaner amp like the kt might be the ticket if using lots of pedals

Ya... Maybe... I guess it depends what you want. I personally like OD to take on the characteristic of the amp. In the case of the Rt66, I love the natural drive of the amp, so I aim for pedals that bring that out or merge well with it.
Im currently using a TIM and it goes great with the 66. I also use a BB pre and it really cuts through the mix live.
A lot of pedals, like tube screamers and fuzz face pedals are made to go into slightly over driven amps. For these pedals, I think the 66 is amazing.
I guess a lot of it depends on how loud you have your volume. You say your bedroom volumes improved a lot since getting the rt 66?! How loud is that peavey??? I have a vox AC30 and my buddy has 50w marshall jubilee... the rt66 is WAY louder than either of these. Even with an airbrake on bedroom settings, I find the amp loud in the house!... Maybe you have the 5U4 rectifier? I have a 2005 Route 66... so i still have the 5ar4... that may be the reason you find yours better at lower volumes.. I would love to hear the route 66 with 5u4.
Anyways, sometimes... for cover bands and such, it is nice to have a louder cleaner amp and just use pedals to get your tones. So maybe that is what your looking for.

I think u hit the nail on the head. The other guitarist has a solid state marshall and the band is used to ultra clean or ultra distorted.
Enter my route and I sound great in a standard overdrive mode but fuzzes get lost in the mix though sounding good by myself

what kind of speakers/cab are you using? When I first got my Route 66 I went through a whole bunch of speaker combinations.
At first I had 2 g12h30s running in an avatar 2X12 closed back... I found i wasnt cutting through the mix as well as my vox ac30 was.
I then switch to an avatar open back 2x12 with 1 g12h30 and 1 Weber Blue Dog (Alnico) and I cut through a lot better..
Then I settled on 1 Blue Dog and 1 Silver Bell (both weber alnico) in the open 2x12 and I haven had any problem cutting through.
I run the amp at about 1 or 2 o'clock vol, treb about 1 and the bass is either at 9 or 1 o'clock depending on which guitar i use. With my 335 i can almost turn the treble off and with the strat or tele I match the treble vol.
This had a major impact on cutting through aswell. The route is a very thick amp and def. has more bass than most amps, like the ac30.

I never noticed my Route getting lost in the mix with fuzz or distortion or even w/the guitar plugged straight in. She would cut through when I wanted and I could hang back just with the turn of the guitar volume.
Speakers I'd gone through were G12-65 (very warm), Private Jack (loved the punchy lows), and Heritage G12H (loved it right out of the box. Thought it was a great match w/the Route. Great highs and lows).
I never tried any ODs. Just not the sound I was looking for. I did have a bit of a time finding the distortion that worked for me. A lot of the distortions I tried that I didn't like changed the amp too much for my taste. Finally ended up settling on a Pinnacle 2. Great sound w/the Route. I was looking for that plexi sound and was able to get it in spades. Crank the Route. Treble @ 4-5o'clock. Bass @ 3-4 o'clock. The gain just under noon on the P2 w/unity gain and bam. I was in heaven.

That pinnacle does sound amazing... I saw some clips on the website. Have you tried the BB PRe? How do you think it compares to the Pinnacle 2?

Mark - Never tried the BB. If you don't have opportunity to try either one out just go with your gut feeling.

I actually have the BB preamp MB, I was just wondering if maybe you had experience with both. That pinnacle seems pretty sweet. I really shouldnt get any more OD pedals right now tho lol... i will wait and check it out next time I pick up a pedal at axeandyoushallreceive.com (i live close to where he runs his website, and he has EVERYTHING).
I like the BB tho, it really cuts through in the mix live. How does the Pinnacle do live, in a band with another guitar player?
Thanks a lot

Mark - No problems at all cutting through live with other guitar players.

Hmm, I think I used the wrong terminology when I said lost in the mix. What I mean is the mix of Route 66's natural sound and the pedal's sound. When I kick in a fuzz, it sounds more Route 66 than fuzz. Using my OCD it sounds more over driven (and great) but my Big Muff and Fulltone 69 and 70 barely sound like I've kicked in a pedal. I typically play pretty clean settings somewhere near all controls on 11 o'clock, not all the way up

a good germanium treble booster (I use a Dynaranger from /13 ) is a beautiful thing with a Rt66...wheather smacking a drive ( I use a DLS or OCD) or just hitting the amp... I'm with the guys who say that The RT and fuzz were made for each other...I recently picked up a Lumpy's Tonebender MkII and DANG! I think I could gig with just that ..ok, and my TB ,...maybe my wah... alittle vibe,... oh hey delay is nice... BUT NO REVERB!!!

DC here!
I have the Carl Martin Hot Drive & Boost MK-III - pedal. The boost is excellent up 15/20 dB of clean boost.
The overdrive section is decent - but no more to my ears. I colors the Route66 sound too much for my taste.
The sound gets a bit muddy doesn't cut throught like it should. The soundscape seem to shrink - if you get my meaning.
Cheers: Dixiechicken!

I'm really enjoying a Fulldrive with my Route 66. I'm using it more as a boost, and I have my volume at noon, bass at noon, and treble at 9. Tonal bliss right here!
