Hello, Nice place you have here! I posted this over on the 'Ask the Experts' forum, thought I'd try here, as time is of the essence! I'm hoping to be a Z owner soon. I'm on a mission.....I've found an older Prescription Combo (serial number G 6151) that comes with a matching 1 x 12 cab. The combo has a Weber "Michigan" speaker, and I don't know what's in the extension cab, as it's a closed back. I tried the amp out and it sounded nice, but within a minute, I heard some odd hum, with a volume drop, and additional noise. It was intermittent. I'm assuming possibly a tube issue. The asking price is $1400 for the combo and extension cab. Obviously, with the "sound" issue, there could be some money involved in repair and tube replacement. I know a very competent amp tech, that I trust. I'm thinking, that if I could purchase this amp at a discount, I could put some money into it, and have a terrific amp. I guess I'm hoping some of you might offer some thoughts on this. Should I bargain with the owner or look for another Z that I won't have to have repaired? Any advice? Thanks very much in advance, and either way, I look forward to being part of the group in the near future. Walt,
First welcome to Z talk, and I agree with everything Phil said in response to your other post...
I would say that it's a fair price for an unmodified RX amp working well with tubes in good shape / life left and basically in working order...
It sounds like a tube issue to me... but you never know.
could get a new set of tubes before you buy it and switch em out, try the amp out / crank it for a while... and if it doesn't have the problem then it was just a tube issue and you've got a brand new set of tubes + the old set as spares except for the tubes not working.
always need spare tubes.
OR
If the amp is in need of repair I'd get the guy to work with you a bit on the price AND...
I would ABSOLUTELY send it back to DOC to have him go through the amp. It's his design and he can make it sing again.
just my .02 but the original RX is a special amp if you can find one.

Jason,
Thanks much for the feedback. The amp is in a shop, and it's a consignment. They're going to contact the owner to see if he'll bargain a bit. If this doesn't work out, I'm going to find a nice Maz Jr or Ghia. I'm on a mission to own a Z. I've been giging with a Crate Vintage Club (30 watt) for the past 15 or 16 years. I'm a weekend player, and it's been unbelievably good, considering the price. I've had lots of amp over the years, some good, some not, but what I have found, the simpler the better, for me. I'm just not a knob tweaker or one who needs several different channels, etc. Anyway, now I'm rambling. Thanks again and I'll let you know what I wind up with!
