Another one is running it inside out!
Don't forget to deep breaths and it gets better... most of the time.

If you click the cabs link in my signature you'll find a listing of the db drops for each click on the Brake Lite. So the first click is a couple db, and every click thereafter is 3db. Dr. Z does not measure this - it is set with a physical jig so these values are approximate.
We have seen this kind of question here before. The trouble is everyone's sensitivity to volume increases and decreases is different. I believe I can hear a volume change as small as 1 db. However it is generally known that many people can barely hear a 3db change. I've seen folks here complain that their Airbrake doesn't do anything until they get the knob all the way (4 clicks). But the next guy to own it says it works fine.
Here is what you can do to find out if it is your perception or not. Have someone else listen and judge for you. Have several folks do this. The more you have do it, the better chance of getting a reasonable answer.
I cannot think of any defect that would cause the volume to rise on one click where it should drop. Each click is programmed by setting a tap on a wire wound resister - resistors just don't have any way to behave the way you've described on their own. Thus I conclude it has to be perception, but I've been wrong before.
Good luck!

Steve Thank you. That makes sense. I have had the brake lite for a long time. This is the first time I noticed a change in its effect on my tone. Maybe its just me and my age is creeping up on me. I will say this much it don't sound bad on 4. I remember when I had my first Remedy at 4 it sounded more compressed and 3 would usually sound better well now its sounds bigger at 4 then 3 go figure? Thanks again for your advise.

Eliminate the perception factor and just measure the level change.

Eliminate the perception factor and just measure the level change. I generally agree with this, but most folks don't have a very reliable way to do that. If you don't have a signal generator going into the front end of the amp, then who knows if you played louder on the second measurement than on the first? If you have a keyboard around though, you could use that as a signal generator if it can be set to put out a continuous tone. All you're really trying to measure is a relative value.

I guess after making a living in Pro AV since 81 I assume everyone has signal generators and SPL meters. ;D

Yep, I watched one of those FaceTube vids of a guy clicking through the BL, and as sure as night and day, he played more and more aggressively as he clicked through from 0-4. My experience from day one is that at 4, the sound is definitely dirtier than at any other setting. Every amp I've attached it to - same effect. I find 4 too compressed and too dirty. The rest of the settings are just fine. Go figure! ;D

God gave us two ears and one mouth. So I let my ears be my guide. I can now change my BL mid song. I have it sitting on my amp top. It's a great tool, especially for lower volume live stuff. I don't leave home with out it. #4 is compressed and dirty. the rest are usable.
