Hello,
I own an old Prescription and I love it, but I wanted to experiment with different pre-amp tubes. What tubes to you recommend to allow for a little more clean headroom?
Thanks!

you can use a 5751 in it but it changes the character of the amp quite a bit but not in a bad way. A little more woody and compressed if i remember right. I tried 12AT7s in it and the amp totally hated them. Noisy nasty uugh. And it wasn't the tube because i had just yanked them out of my VTL hi-fi amps which sounded just fine. I'm not sure what the deal was there because they should have just reducted the gain. I ended up with old stock RCA ax7s after running through a bunch of tubes and am pretty happy with it.
With my Rx the gain verses volume change starts to get dominated by gain change around 11-12 oclock and i find that running the amp about 10 oclock, no boost and rolling off the guitar volume i can handle 99% of the gigs i play volume wise with plenty of headroom.
It ain't never going to be a twin except maybe in weight.
