I'v be told that one can achieve the Niel Young (insane overdriven sound) with an octave pedal like the Boss OC-2. I've also heard that in conjunction with an overdrive pedal that it can push the amp too hard, as far as making the speaker cone "pop". Has anyone had any experience with the Boss or other octave pedals? I'm not that interested in the Jimi Hendrix sound so much as the Niel Young and Crazy Horse kind of insanity. I just don't want to drive my amp as hard as he does. I usually play clean or with an overdrive pedal and only at 1/4 volume on the Mazerati. So that NY and CH sound is a small part of my tonal interest, if one could even call that sound "tone".

Hey Foxx...Neil says:""" I have an effects rack -- actually not a rack, it's a box full of effects. They're all very old: echoplex, analog delay, Mutron octave divider, a Boss flanger that must be from 1969. I start them all from a set of metal switches -- NASA quality stuff...I have some remotes to start them from a distance. I can't use the small Boss pedals. Each time it's the same thing: «Oh, we're sorry» and the whole thing smashes to bits... """ That is from a 1992 interview. Check out www.thrasherswheat.org/ptma/Frenchguitar492.htm

Exactly. If you want to get that "out of control" Neil Young octave sound or the Jimi "Purple Haze", you need an old Germanium based octave pedal. I use an Ulbrick "Pro Octave" which is an exact replica (except it is true bypass) of the original Tycobrah octavia. Personally made for me by Dave. Wild...You can smooth it up by driving an overdrive behind it or on its own just unleash it for some madness! Can be subtle too with your guitar volume knob turned down.

Thanks for the input guys. I'll look into that pro octave. Dave Ulbrick has just recently started making amps and effects (killer stuff) after looking after Australia's best guitarists for 4 decades. He is an engineering wizard. I don't think he has a website yet so it might be hard to find any info on the Pro Octave although there maybe a review at Harmony Central under Ulbrick Music. He is also in Australia. I would guess they are about $250.00 US. If you become interested in purchasing I can get you a link or email address.
