Has anybody tried the Danelectro Spring King Reverb pedal? I know the Holy Grail is not thought of real fondly, but is one better than the other?

My own experience I think the spring king is O.K. but I think the holy grail smokes it. Also check out the other pedals in the h.g. line I believe there is a holier grail, and the holiest grail not sure but check them out. For around a hundred dollars the Holy Grail is pretty good in my opinion especially with DR.Zs. Maybe also add an e.q. in the line to take out some of the noise. I and many people I know will tell you yes the h.g. does make noise but in a live setting with a band you won't notice it. Check out all of your options before you buy.

I got a Holy Grail pedal when they first came out. Sounds like springs to me!

I like the Holy Grail, it works out just fine for me. One thing I've noticed though, as you turn the amp up, the reverb increases along with it. Kind of like, you can use less distortion from a stomp box as your natural amp overdrive goes up. So as long as you remember to turn the reverb down at higher volumes, it sounds great. Besides, even if there is little background noise, I have never used a pedal that doesn't. I think it's a myth. Sure there are degrees of noise, but I wouldn't say the Holy Grail was any worse than any other $100 box out there.

I was in a music store today trying out a Holy Grail and just happened to try it through a Ghia. Very nice and smooth. I had a hard time believing that the Holy Grail didn't have a tube stuffed into it somewhere.
I had a fender 63 reissue tube reverb tank that I dumped when I tried the Holy Grail. To me the Holy Grail sounds just as good and has more options.

The danelectro and Holy Grail each sound a bit off to me. The HOLIER grail reverb is another story, hands down the best Reverb out there. Imho.

I purchased a Holy Grail when they first came out. I thought the reverb was great but it was noisy, very noticeable when playing loud. I recently purchased one and it has much, much less noise. The knobs are a bit different on the newer model. I have used it directly into the Ghia and it works fine. I have also tried it in the effects loop of a Maz 18 NR with equally good results. If my memory is correct the newer one is true-bypass as your signal will still get through if the power to the pedal is removed.

one other point is that my EH Holy Grail had more noise and added considerable unpleasant treble when using a multiple pedal power unit (1 spot) than when using its own wall wart. When I switched back eveything got quieter and also the tone smoothed a bit and was nice. It works great, maybe little noisy, but for $100 bucks is a great solution. Besides, a little noise is nothing compared to when the drummer kicks in...
