Hi, I have had my Mini Z 1x10 combo for a little over a week and its services have already been called upon. We played at the smallest venue ever yesterday, the drummer had to set up in the annex I kid you not!! Ok, it probably wasnt the smallest ever venue but you get the picture Anyways, I took along the Mini Z instead of my MAZ18 and while it easily held its own versus the rest of the band generally, I did struggle getting a clean sound with enough volume to cut through. Are there any tricks to increasing the headroom? Tube and speaker changes perhaps? Thanks in advance for any input. Cheers, Mark.

Try a 12ay7.

IMHO changing the preamp tube to a lower gain tube like a 12ay7 will increase the "clean" range on the volume knob but doesn't seem to increase clean volume. You might try the 12ay7 and if that doesn't do enough for you try an extension cab.

Thanks, Mark

this is a bit funny really. wanting more clean headroom out of an el84 and a 12ax7. kinda like wanting clean headroom out of a monza. aint designed for it. i get lots of clean headroom out of my mazerati gt, but its barely on!

Mine is a lot louder through my 1x12 z cab than the red fang 10" Tube swaps are not going to get you much more volume. I would try a bigger cab or just run the maz and the mini on a good quality channel switcher pedal and go all out with both.

Swapping the tube to a 12AY7 has given me what I was hoping for and actually surprised me that a tube swap could make so much difference.
Apologies if my original post was mis-leading, I am happy with the volume available but I wanted it to stay cleaner at the higher volumes.
With the humbucker and split coil the 12AX7 was breaking up around 10/11 o'clock. I can now get a clean tone past noon and it doesn't start getting hairy until 2/3 o'clock.
Thanks for all the replies and recommendations, all were really helpful.
Cheers, Mark
