There are so many of these pedals to consider and I was looking to get a pro-con discussion going on the merits of each pedal. Naturally, it boils down to personal preferrence and the guitar, amp, and speaker make a difference- )perhaps use a Ghia/V30 as a reference point). But this is all about sharing opinions on these and others: Katana Boost, Java Boost, OCD, Fat Boost, Full Drive 2, King Of Tone, Dual Drive, Fish Factory, Red Sanpper...

It's really hard to discuss these things when we all like different tones. But I can tell you, that I've had my share of OD's and I'm still looking for "The One". I've found some that work with my Fender amps don't work as well with my Z amps. Here's a short list of what I have/had.
# Fulltone Fat Boost # Fulltone CS Fulldrive 2 # Fulltone OCD # Analogman King Of Tone # Analogman SD-9/Silver # Analogman DS-1 Pro # Analogman NKT-275 Sun Face Fuzz # Klon Centaur # Red Snapper # Timmy # Clark Gainster (big box)
Just to name a few. And I mean A FEW! ;D

Lefty- Wow, quite a collections over the years... Specifically with your Z amps, what did you like/not like about each pedal? SInce that's a lot to ask, I'm mostly interested in the Fulltones, Analogman KOT, Red Snapper, and Klon.

The Red Snapper works great with my Z28. I use it for boost and low gain overdrive. Another goodie is the Z-Vex Super Duper. Very versatile pedal despite the fact that it only has 3 controls for 2 channels. Another overdrive that I really like with my Z28 is the Menatone TBIAC; you can get some nice compressed Voxy-grit with the brilliant channel and Matchless-type lead sounds with the normal channel.

The Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive is pretty sweet. It doesn't color or compress the amp at all. The true tone of the amp remains the same. It puts a meaner sound on your tone, but it's pretty versatile.

I finally got a Maj Jr. two weeks ago and wanted to get a good overdrive unit for it. In the meantime I bought a plain old Boss OD3 and am quite taken with how transparent this pedal is. I want to get a boutique pedal at some point but don't know if they are significantly better. The music stores don't carry boutique pedals where I live. Can anyone suggest a good overdrive suited to the Maz. I have to order one in without trying it first?

For a clean boost, I still like my old trusty Fulltone Fatboost.
OD's I am liking my Barber Burn Unit EQ. I have owned the pedal since about 2001 and had it upgraded to EQ by Mr. Barber in about 2002. I use the Blackface and Marshall settings. I also go back and forth with the BU and my Mosferatu 2. The Mos, to me sounds like a cross between a Dumbel and Marshall. The two pedals are different, but both very cool.
A few I have tried- Fish Factory, Everything sounds flat and farty. Fulltone II, Dull and harsh at the same time. Banzai Fireball II, Just couldn't quite dial it in. Tonebone Trimode, Does the same as the MOS & Barber, but used a funky power supply, so I sold it. Menatone Blue Collar, Best single OD I have owned. Very Marshally. Way Huge Green Rhino, My favorite Tube Screamer copy.
Way too many others to mention, but they didn't cut it in the long run anyway.

tried a TON. way too many to mention. most of them were auditioned with the Ghia, but several along the way also hit a few other Z and tophat amps for at least brief periods of time.
My hands down favorite that I've tried is the Hellbilly. Java Boost is right there too, but the bang for the buck factor of the Hellbilly is the final factor that put it at the top. It's affordable, versatile, and outdoes any other boost pedal out there for what I want it to do.
For bang for the buck, I also like the Pro Tone Mach II (fulltone fat boost without a tone control).

Anybody tried that Nick Greer Sonic Boom? It's gotten some good reviews on HC. I really want to get a Gilmourish type clean boost for my SRZ-65. I don't want a treble booster either - Something that's got some low end to it, almost like a tube driver but smaller (I'm running out of room on the board... I know... GAS..)
suggestions please?

johnnyl - you should try the MI Audio Blue Boy. It's got some serious low end if you want it via the internal trim pots. Capable of being used as anything from a full range clean boost that would add some sweet Gilmour-esque sustain, to stock tubescreamer sounds, and FAR beyond as it's capable of much more gain than that IF you want it.
I use it similar to what you describe you're looking for... a slight push to add a little gain from both the pedal and from my amp getting hit harder, and a mostly transparent full range boost with full bottom end, neutral top (balanced to my original signal), and ever so slightly boosted mids. You can barely hear that I stepped on it until the note decays, and instead of fading, it just sings into beautiful controlled feedback.
It's the most tube-like pedal I've ever tried, including several that had actual tubes in them. It's hugely versatile, and can be dialed in to give you what you're looking for out of just about any rig.

Anyone use the Menatone King of the Britiains? I tried one the other day and it sounded great. It's got two different drive controls - sort of a power tube drive and a preamp drive. Very cool. I may pick one up for my higher-gain tones. I still want to try some of the MI stuff, too. It never ends.

With my Maz Jr I've been through a Fulldrive, Reverend Drivetrain, Tubescreamer, VS Rt 66, and a Keeley Blues Driver. None of them were "the" ticket. Most recently I've been favoring a <gasp> Digitech Bad Monkey and a Barber Direct Drive. Curious to try a Zendrive.

I previously posted the Menatone Fish Factory sounded flat and farty. I have been dialing it and fiddling the past couple days and it is sounding very cool.
I apologize to Mr. Mena for bashing the Fish Factory.

For clean articulated boost, I tried this and loved it: DURHAM ELECTRONICS SD-01 SEX DRIVE It even has a built in compression to really squeeze out thoes clean tones. The second booster for lead stuff is the: XOTIC AC BOOST
The Xotic took the Ghia at a low level to what it would sound like cranked. It has Gain, Level, Bass and Treble controls.
The Durham was going for about $220 ish... The Xotic was about $179 or so...
I would highly conisder purchasing both of these some day.

Haven't found THE o/d pedal yet. Currently using a newer Fulldrive 2 w/the 3 position mini-switch. Going to try a ZenDrive in the near future. As far as a boost pedal, I use an Addrock Boostmaster. It works well with every amp and pedal I have, and I would be lost without it!

I never tried a Blue Boy, but I have an MI Audio G.I. Fuzz and it is just plain sick and full of low end crunch. It's range is amazing too. MI Audio seems to be great stuff.

Is anyone using any flavor of Rat pedal? I have good memories of those in the '80s.
