I'm seriously considering a EZG50 head and 1x12 cabinet to go along with my Ron Kirn Tele. Right now I have a Swart Atomic Space Tone 1x12 combo that sounds great in the house or with a small drumless trio. Add the drums and forget about it, I just disappear. I play clean 90% of the time in a newly forming funk/blues/rock band, and get the dirt with pedals. Does the EZG50 sound like my kind of amp? I'm asking the experts here since I've never owned a Z. Thanks for the help-Jerry

I'm not familiar with your amp but I can't see you being dissapointed with the EZG. Superb clean tones and can get VERY loud! Takes pedals well if you want extra dirt at lower volumes. Try one and you'll buy one! lol

The whole thing is dependent on what type of clean you are going for and what volume you need. I love clean Marshall type amps (Remedy, Super Lead Plexi, Reeves Custom 50, etc) and I am not alone- listen to Hendrix, Beck, Thin Lizzy, for example- but many people like Fender type amps for clean sounds. I like Fender sounds too of course, and the EZG is my favorite non-vintage example.
For thick, complex, clean sounds, I love the EZG-50 and it can sound good at low volumes or really loud volumes. And the EZG still retains clean headroom way past where many other amps break up.
Several Z amps offer great clean sounds, even the MAZ 18 will get you pretty darn loud and clean with a tele. Try an EZG-50, then a MAZ 18 or 38, then maybe the Z-28 or Galaxie. Any of those could probably work for you, but if you need the Marshall clean, then a Remedy is the way to go. Cheers

mtlrecords made some great points. It does depend on what kind of clean you're after. Except for amps like the Mini, I believe Z amps have some of the best clean tones on the business...that's why I love my Zs.
I guess you could break it down to "Fender", "Marshall", and "Vox" type cleans. The Swart AST is a great amp. I've always thought of it as sounding like a Fender tweed amp being run through a British speaker (with the stock Mojo BV-25 speaker).
As far as Dr. Z goes:
The best "Fender" type clean sound I've EVER heard is the EZG-50. I think Guitar Player magazine said the same thing.
My MAZ 18 NR with my Room Mate reverb in front has a killer Voxy/Fendery clean sound. My MAZ 38 NR with the same Room Mate pedal will give any Super or Twin Reverb a run of it's money...and win IMO.
In the Marshall camp the Remedy does have a stellar clean tone...as does the Route 66.
For pure "Vox" cleans the Stangray is simply awesome. Every time Don and I have our little amp shootouts the Ray with two Blues wins every time.
My favorite clean of all though may be my Kt-45...which has this great Fender/Hiwatt thing that sounds great with Strats or Teles. Notes just jump out of the speaker...hybrid picking and sixths (think "Hideaway" bridge section) never sounded so dynamic and well defined.
Anyway, for blues/funk/rock with pedals the EZG will be awesome. The KT-45 would be great as well.
That's just some of 'em. The Ghia, JAZ, RxES, and Galaxie (channel 1) have great cleans too.

Yeah, it's funny how many different types of "clean" sounds there are.
I used to just think of clean as clean (ie Fender Twin clean) and didn't see what all the fuss was about. But after years of gigging, recording and amp shootouts, I have come to appreciate the subtle differences in the 4 types of clean "camps" out there- Fender, Marshall, Vox, Hiwatt- which are kind of starting points.
Most of the Z amps have great clean sounds and more than enough volume for most people and situations. I think it will be fairly easy to settle in on a clean sound that makes you happy- an EZG-50 or Galaxie will really nail the Fender sound and the Remedy will get you the Marshall sound (and then some). Distorted tones are going to be much trickier to settle on, IMO.

The EZG50 is an excellent amplifier, well made with quality components. I use KT66 Gold Lions for the power tubes, with a NOS 12AT7 in the V1 position because this is the sound I like. As others have chimed, you won't be disappointed with the EZG50 ;D

Phil, Every time I think I NEED to get an EZG-50, I come across a comment like this about the KT-45. The KT-45 is the best. Still want the EZG-50.

I A/B'ed the EZG-50 and the KT-45 when I was amp shopping and I chose the EZG-50. I love the KT-45, but the EZG has that more Fendery type goodness AND killer reverb, which I was really wanting out of an amp.
I would say that some of the tones overlap between those two amps and if you don't need reverb and want a little bit earlier breakup and a tad less overall perceived volume, than the KT-45 would be a great choice. I wish I could afford both, but again, I am very satisfied with the EZG-50.
