I've noticed that when I use my Airbrake at bedroom levels it is more distorted. Even if I set the amp for a clean sound, at Bedroom setting it is somewhat distorted. What could be wrong here?

I find when I'm using my airbrake on Bedroom levels, I end up cranking the amp and guitar more. What I mean by that is....I tend to not use the inbetween sounds, where you turn the guitar volume down for a less than blazing sound. More use of the compressor, more used of my FDII....and less of just the guitar and amp in a not-in-lead mode.
When gigging, I make full use of those inbetween sounds. But when using the Bedroom settings, I'm always wanting to crank it up a little more.

Ronnie, you asked: Well it all depends I suppose. But I've been getting fabulous low volume tones from the Stingray I have. Most of my gigs I have the Airbrake at about 3 clicks down, but I do a lot of recording with it on bedroom and it sounds pretty doggone good to me. But I have different ears than you, so who knows? You may have already seen it, but I did a series of clips to demonstrate that a while back, and didn't identify which were thru and which had attenuation. I had clips for every level, and not one person could tell me which was bedroom vs which was thru. If you missed that series, check here: drzamplifiers.proboards41.com/index.cgi?board=soundfiles&action=display&thread=1183466889Personally I think it's worth a try - even if you don't end up using it on bedroom, the added control the Airbrake gives you makes the Stingray one of the coolest amps of all time.Let's try this again - I forgot you HAVE one! If you're hearing distortion at bedroom levels, you may be more picky than me. Or maybe there's a problem. How are your power tubes?

Thanks Steve...yes I remember hearing your clips and that is really what got me to thinking I may have an airbrake problem. Tubes - cant vouch for the Ray since I just got but Evan says the power tubes had about 50 hours on them when I bought it but...my experience w/the Airbrake is mainly from the Ghia and Z28...I could set either of those amps for a clean sound then notice them get distorted as I moved the Ab into bedroom territory...and the Ray reacts the same way.

I just got the AB and have experienced the same thing, especially when compared to the Hot Plate ... it definitely "adds" something ... not sure if it's the Airbrake itself, or the amp is working harder at that setting so it saturates more. Doc or Myles would probably be the only ones to accurately answer this question.

Yes, on Bedroom setting and turning the bedroom volume knob to the lowest possible volume will cause some breakup. In a sense, you're choking the crap out of the signal, so it is compressing and distorting a little. But this can also be used to an advantage.
There really is nothing to the AB to go wrong. It's a coil with a spring and magnet. Not too much to go wrong.

I think all attenuators increase compression and distortion at low settings- just adjust your amp settings. Brett

Mine does this too, but I also notice it when gigging and playing clean. It does add some distortion. If I unplug it and don't change any settings on the amp it is of course louder, but the signal is clean. My Hotplate does not do this. I have noticed this with my Maz Sr., Jr., and Allen Old Flame.
Love the Z amps, not the attenuator.

The MiniMass, while I'm sure it isn't as transparent as some, has a great bypass. I use the different insertion losses someone posted (was it benttop?) with the 3 different impedances. I start the night with minimal attenuation at 4 ohms (4 ohm cab), then no attenuation at 4 ohms, I then switch to 8 ohms which seems to attenuate less. I checked if this was ok to do with Ted Weber and he said not a problem. When I need a louder clean tone for jazzy sounds on my x-tone neck pickup I bypass the attenuator completely. I notice that between the various ohm settings there are slight differences in distortion- I don't use the 16 ohm one for that reason. Brett
