As per the Z Airbrake instruction manual. A ohm mismatch is recomended when using vintage amps. An example of a Vox AC30 set on the 8 ohm tap running through the Airbrake into a 16 ohm load was used. This is to prevent extra stress on the old transformers. Another example would be, 4 ohms on the amp into an 8 ohm cab while hooked to the airbrake.
So then, If this is good for vintage amps, it should also be fine with more modern amps without ill effects. Great for times when you have an 8 ohm head but only a 16ohm cab to use. Would anyone like to comment?

I have read that it is O.K. to hook an amp up to a higher speaker ohm rating. For example 4ohm amp to 8 or 16 speakers, 8ohms to 16, ect. But you cannot go down, 8ohm amp to 4ohm cab. I dont remember were I read this, maybe the Weber site. I am going to look for it. I will put a new post up as soon as I find it!

i read the whole thread over on the gear page and am still confused. there did not seem to be a final conclusion about the issue. i have always set my amp to match the ohms of the cab, have used the Aibrake at all levels of attenuation, and never had a problem. i'd like to better understand the different schools of thought on this subject in order to make my own conclusion, but so far no problems just keeping the ohms on the amp set to match the cab.

Follow the manufacturer's recommendations and you should be fine. YMMV as always.

I asked Brent last week about running the Galaxie (8 ohm tap only) thru a 16 ohm cab..
He said it wouldn't put any undue stress on the head, or harm it in any way.
He also stated that I may lose a little bottom, and the amp "might" break up a little quicker.. I didn't notice either that was actually dicernable... FWIW

So would it be safe to run my Junior through a 16 Ohm Cab, with no attenuator ?

Yep,
I ran my head for a couple of months into a vintage Marshall 4X12 16ohm cab while I waited for my Z-Best (used the 8ohm tap BTW). I contacted the DR himself before I did it and he said no worries, so I didn't.
