I've seen these cabinets for cheap on ebay and they are only 45lbs with celestion 10's inside. The same with the 1965b cabinets. How do you think these would sound with an EZG-50? I've been waiting to purchase aZ 4x10 cab but at $679 they are expensive. Do you think these Marshall cabs would sound good or should I just spring for the Z cab?

i have one of the older open bacl 2/10 z cabinets.. it is a really great speaker set up, but, i just had to have a z 4/10 cab so i got one from humbuckers a couple months ago,, i probably dont really NEED it, BUT, it is a monster thing with a lot of low end, i couldnt imagine needing anything else now,, i know i will never need another 4/10 cab,, now, if i found a marshall 4/10 cab for around 400 bucks i might spring for it,, but i wouldnt pay over 5 for one,,,

I am sure the Marshall is OK. I just don't know about the Celestion 10" speakers in those cabinets...maybe they are good, maybe not. I would save up and get a Z 4x10 or wait for a used one to pop up. Or try a 2x12. You can't go wrong with a couple of Greenbacks in a closed or semi-open back cab- Z-Best, Marshall 1936, Germino, or Vox all sound good with the EZG. The edge might go to the Germino.

I owned a Marshall 1965A for a couple of years. I used it w/ a Marshall JCM 2000 100 watt head. It sounded pretty good. It had the stock Celestion 35 watt speakers. When I got into Z amps, I only had the cab long enough to use it w/ my first Z head, a MAZ Jr NR. It sounded good w/ the Z, too. For some reason, and I'm sure it wasn't a good one, I sold it. I ended up picking up a Mesa 4X10 w/ the Jensen repro AlNiCo 10"s. I didn't like the stock speakers in the Mesa nearly as much as the Marshall. I swapped them out for some Weber AlNiCo 10"s which I made a huge improvement (even over the Marshall). Unfortunately, I didn't have both at the same time to do a head-to-head comparison, but from what I remember, I like the Webers better. Back to the 1965... It's significantly lighter than the Mesa 4X10. It's closed-back which gives it a more directional - not as diffuse sound. And it's much tighter on the low-end over the AlNiCo speakers (the Celestion 35 watt speaks were ceramic). In my opinion, the Marshall cab wasn't built nearly as well as the Mesa or my Z cabs. I think I paid $200 for it, used. I ended up selling it for $200. The average price I see them going for, used, is in the $250-$350 price range. I wouldn't pay over $300 for one, even if it was in immaculate condition, as I don't think the construction quality is there. Don't get me wrong; it's a decent cab. The stock speaks are OK. Like I said, I believe they sounded better than the stock Mesa AlNiCos. It's a decent, light, compact cab. It's going to sound different than one of Z's 4X10s. The Marshall has Celestion 35 watt speakers, and Z uses a 70 watt speaker made to his specs (I believe by Eminence). Z's cab is constructed of much better materials. But as you mentioned, Z's cab is three times more expensive. Another cab to look into would be the Avatar 4X10. You would get your choice of speakers. Dave would do Celestion Gold, 10" Vin 30's, or the new Greenback 10". He'd also mix 'em up for dissimilar speakers. He also does Eminence. His prices are pretty good. I have two of his 2X12 cabs. Their quality, in my opinion, is better than the Marshall's. JDesign makes a pretty well rated cab, too. He'll do anything you want - to your specs - at a very reasonable price. After all that, Z heads look best on Z cabs. Do the Z cabs sound that much better? I can't say. I can say my Z cabs now outnumber my non-Z cabs...

I have an older style 1x12 cabinet with a vintage 30 and an older 2x10 cabinet with the z speakers in it. I run them together and they sound great but I will eventually pick up a 4x10 Z cabinet and probably sell the two older style cabinets. So if anyone os looking for an older style cab mine will probably be up for sale once I get a 4x10 cabinet.
