So, I'm thinking about adding (yet) another Z amp to the collection, and right now I'm considering either the RX Jr or the Z-28. The attraction of the Z-28 is that it's not EL84-based; all of my other amps are. It's also super simple and might add some variety to the old tonal palette. The advantage of the RX Jr is that it IS EL84s--I like them--but would I basically just be getting another MAZ 18? Also, what's up with the "overdose" control? Is it foot-switchable? Thanks for any/all input--much appreciated as always.

Yeah two Maz amps a Monza. The RxJr might be over kill in the EL-84 land. So dump one of the Maz amps and get both a Z-28 and a RxJr. Totally foot controlable and very useful at volume. A bit much at low volumes as it is a boost, but at volume it's pretty sweet.

I don't own a Z-28, but I do have the MAZ Jr NR and the RXJr Heads. To me, the RXJr is much more "gainy." It's like a little Marshall. I think there is a pretty big difference between the MAZ Jr and the RXJr. Now you do have the Monza, which I don't have. That would be the question. How similar is the Monza and the RXJr? Again, I would suspect they would be pretty different, as the RXJr has the EF-86 in the preamp. If you like the EL-84s, get the RXJr. If you like the Fendery 6V6s, get the Z-28. I don't think you could go wrong w/ either...

I had a Z-28 right before my Rx Jr and I'm getting more of what I need in clean headroom and tone out of the Jr.
I can also say the Jr. offers the cathode bias which keeps me from needing a tech to bias the amp on new tube day.

The Z28's cleans are nice, but I (like you) prefer EL-84's. My Maz and Rx Jr get great cleans. Also, as Rich mentioned, I find the Maz and Rx Jr to be very different.
