Has anyone mounted a Brake Lite inside of a 2x12 open back cabinet? I have a Stang Ray head with the 2x12 open back and was wondering if this can be done or should I just get an air brake?

You can do it, it's just that the Brake Lite is set up to work perfectly with a Convertible cab or Combo. So the wire harness is probably going to be too short, and you'll have to figure out how to deal with the jack on your cab and how to get the speakers connected to the Brake Lite. None of that is hard at all if you're willing to do some modifications. If you're uncomfortable with that, you should have a pro install it for you.
If I were going to do this, and it was going to be a permanent installation, I'd rewire the whole shebang as follows:
First I'd rewire the speakers to a 1/4" plug so they can plug in to the bottom of the Brake Lite. Then I'd remove the 1/4" plug from the wire harness and run that over to the 1/4" jack on the back of the cab. That way you connect the cab just as you always have, but the Brake Lite is now between the input jack and the speakers.

I did it to my open-back 2x12. I screwed it into the lower back panel. There's just enough length in the wire to reach the amp. When I'm transporting it I plug the 1 end of the Brake Lite into the output jack of the Brake Lite so the plug doesn't flop around and puncture a speaker.

I did it on my 2x10 cab and the cable on the brake lite was long enough to fit my maz 18 head. Th other guitarist of my band owns a Carmen Ghia but the brake lite cab will not stretch to the speaker inputs of his head. When he borrows my cab he has to set his head on the ground. it doesnt look great. It hard to say if the back of the Stang Ray speaker inputs are at the same level as the Ghia or the Maz, the could even be different again. Sometimes I wonder if the air brake has a better level of control that the brake lite, yet again im not too sure. The price is a killer between the two. The brake lite will definitely work. There are not many Z's here in Northern Ireland and definitely no dealers here so it hard to know:( Check out the the DR's site maybe the might be a pic of the back of the maz and ghia so you can compare it with your Stang Ray. hope this helps.
