I have a brand new Galaxie - 2007 model - and I'm playing my 2 vintage (a '57 and a '62) Strats through it. I haven't had a Gibson since my Les Paul Custom from 1978. I'm getting the urge to play a Gibson ES 335 through my new Galaxie. I'm thinking it would be a blues orgasm! Anybody out there with a 335 through a Galaxie? Let me know how you like it. I'm playing a lot of electric blues, and I'm GASsing for a 335. Want to get your comments. Anybody play the new ES 339? What cha' think? Is it better than a 335 (cheaper price - better body balance?).... Thanks for your thoughts!

Briefly flirted with a coupla ES 335s and ES339s when I had my Galaxie 112 combo. Definitely an affair to remember. From sweeet to lotsa heat. ;D ;D Mostly I spent time playin' thru the clean side of the Galaxie .... but steppin' on the pedal for channel 2 was pretty wild ... in a good way. And, I tended to use more of the neck pickup or middle position when playing - I like the bridge pickup too, but the way I play and the sounds I've been chasing and workin' with tend to be more of that jazz/blues/rock from the 50s and 60s. Between the two models, I felt the 335s in general gave a more warm and wide open sound. And, the way a big body Gibson resonates is kinda unworldly too. Most notable for me was a late 60s '335 in walnut with trapeze tailpiece .... definitely to be remembered fondly and forever as the one that got away .... As for the '339s that I tried, there was an equally good sound and feel to playin' .... but perhaps a little more focused and slightly more in the Les Paul tone-zone .... I'm sure if you check some of the posts I've made in the past coupla years you can see how much of a tone chase/lust/ craziness my thing for ES guitars has been .... even I cain't figure out why I haven't finally landed one or two in the permanent collection ... good playin' guitars for sure, but maybe not my true calling as opposed to just being a guitar I dig Short answer? To paraphrase T-rock, a Gibson semi-hollow guitar with any of Dr Z Amps will be a sweeet experience Hope that helps, eh Joel

Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. I'm thinking of the ES335 and toying with the idea of the 339. Gotta' check it out. Thanks for the info.

I just happen to have a late 60's early 70s Walnut Casino with trapeze tail piece -- you're right that big bodies sound great with Z amps!

With my Galaxie and Gibson 336, the only thing keeping me from being a blues king is talent, or lack of it I should say. The combination has more tone than I know what to do with. A 335 sounds a bit brighter and feels like it weighs a few pounds more. I cannot comment on a 339, never touched one.

Hey Joel - haven't gotten either yet. I found a real nice looking 335 in Wine Red - Used for $1995. I'm seriously thinking about it. Also toying with the idea of a PRS SE Custom Hollow body - they go for around $665 brand new. Since I've got the two Strats, I need to break out and go the humbucker route, but I'm leaning towards the semi-hollow body instead of a solid. I can only imagine it will sound fantastic with the Galaxie.

I should also mention that I'm having my old Echoplex EP3 restored. I plan on boxing it up and sending it to Orbit Electronix in Arizona.
Anybody have the WET Reverb Pedal from Neunaber Technology? Been looking at that as a reverb unit...

Well, I took the plunge. I ordered a brand-spanking new ES-335 Figured Top in Light Burst. It is on backorder right now, so I am patiently waiting...
Question for you guys - if I wanted to get an extension cabinet (2x12) to go with my Galaxie 2x10 combo, what is the correct ohms for the cab? 8 ohms? I'm looking at an Avatar with two 12" Greenbacks. What cha' think?

The output transformer is designed for an 8 Ohm load. The extension jack is there only because there was one in the original Fender and Mike Z seems to have a real soft spot in his heart for history. My words, not his, btw. For proper attention to the tone as designed, the transformer should see an 8 Ohm load. That means 8 Ohms regardless so one jack - 8 Ohms, two jacks, which are wired parallel - 16 Ohms each. The design is robust enough to handle a total load from say 4 Ohms to 16 Ohms, no worries. Below 8 Ohms, the amp runs hotter and you burn power tubes faster. Above 8 Ohms, cooler and slower, etc. Not a big deal either way. How this affects the tone is left as an exercise for the player.

Well, got my 335. Through the Galaxie, it has a wonderful warm, sweet distortion - just right. A perfect compliment to the 2 Strats I have! ;D

Nice ax Pete.... Gigged my (new) '72 335 last w/e, w/3 guys I played with back in the 70's/80's(different bands)... Sort of...a "reunion" thing. (That's what us old folk do to get attention) Room was packed (200+)....The other guitar player(shud have had a record deal when he was 15) commented on my guitar/rig while we were setting up. "Looks cool", he sayd.... 2nd set.......Comfortably Numb......he gives me the nod for the big solo........MISTAKE! About 4 bars into it....he yanks the vol knob on his guitar, and crosses his arms over the neck/upper bout of his custom, 1-off/neck thru/ 2 million dollar jewel laiden,(yeah...I know), Moonstone, and just stands there & grins at me..... He says to me, up close, after the tune was over....during the overwhelming crowd noise.........."I have NEVER, heard you play, or sound, that good.... DrZ huh?" It was one of those nights, when I absolutely, cud not hit a wrong note, or get a bad sound out of my rig, even while playing toons I hadn't thought about in over 30 years. We had ZERO rehearsals for this. I got a call 6 days prior...."What do you think about doing this?"......ummmmmm....Hell yeah...... THAT, my friend, is what a semi-hollow Gibson, + a DrZ Galaxie is capable of.

Pete, that just takes my breath away. Shiny! Be good to it. Tony, sound files or it did not happen. Did I get that right? Is that what they say on TGP? You DID tell him it was mostly chops, with a little Z on the side, right? I know you do not run with guys who think it is all about the gear.

LOL.......... Trust me, Bruthr......it happened. Got zero clips...."mite" be able to find you a jpeg or 2......twist me arm. Haven't played w/any of those 3 cats in over 2 decades. It was just a magical 4.5 hours. One of those nights, I wasn't 'sposta experience again(in my mind). Never know....went so well, there's talk of maybe doing a reunion/"reunion".......aka.....Fossil Rock. I remember seeing Grace Slick, on a "Behind the Music", or some such BS, wherein, she stated..."There's nothing worse, than watching old people, play rock & roll....myself included". I tend to agree.

Very cool! I'm one of those "old-timers" too. Haven't played with a band in front of an audience since the early 80's. The only guy I've kept in touch with is the singer and that's because he's my cousin!

I can't speak to whether a 335 sounds good with the Galaxie, but I will say overall, I much prefer single coil equipped guitars through it. Teles, G&L's, Jazzmasters- they all sound better then any of my Gibson or Epiphones (which, Yes, do have quality humbuckers).
I would imagine that the sustain would be pretty great though. Just not enough clean headroom and the character of the amp (to my ears) becomes a little less forgiving or slightly harsher in the upper-mids with HB's.
Congrats on the git!

I love my 339 through my Galaxie. It's got such a wonderful tone. The thing just screams and sings when I want it to.
Also, I'm picking up a Tele on Monday. And I can't wait to hear it through the Gal too.
