There is about -1.8dB per step and that first step seems slighter as your mind and ears can play a few tricks on you. If you have an amp mic'd and going into a console with a test tone you can see the VU levels change.
There is actually about the same level of drop but perhaps it is only when you get down to step three that you notice a big difference. In live work you see that going from 0 to 1 when the sound people are right on the edge of complaining usually will do the trick and make everybody happy.
In any case, you can open the unit up and actually change the level of the steps via the resistor strapping.
On a side note .... welcome to the forum. Belgium .... pretty darn great chocolate there!

On the Marshall 4X12/Z best comparison; I have a Marshall 4x12 Classic slant with the greenbacks and a z best with (1) vintage 30 & (1) G-12-H.
I have run both with the following Z heads; Route 66, Maz Jr NR and Ghia and for me the Z is better, more bottom w/o question, and a smaller package to huff in/out...but not much lighter !! The Z-best is a heavy mutha for my 43 years !!
I let the Z best sit and usually pack my Z 1X12 cab and Ghia, plenty for the clubs I play.
