So it's been 3 months and I'm still loving my Galaxie... But I gigged w/ it this past week at a camp, and from the get-go, I was having issues. The sound would phase in and out, getting louder after the initial note. At first I thought this was an issue w/ my attenuator (a Weber Mini-Mass 50), but even after I bypassed that and went straight to the cab, the issue was still there. Then it got worse, on Wednesday, I went to turn on my Galaxie for sound check, and it turned on just fine. Then I turned on the power rack (which powers our mixer, power conditioner, and other stuff), and all the power on the right side of the building went completely out (which included my Galaxie). Well, then once I flipped the breakers again for the building (piece of crap wiring job; very ancient), I powered up my Galaxie again. And when I hit the stand-by switch to "on", that's when it made this fluttering, sputtery, buzzing noise. It wasn't so much crackling, as it was just a sputtery buzz. I really wish I could describe it more specifically. It is just a cutting-in-and-out buzz that only happens on occasion when I turn it on. It's almost as if there's a tremolo or delay pedal inside the amp and someone is twisting the delay time knobs from slower to faster, because that's what happens. It starts off slow and sputtery, then it speeds up and eventually fades away. Is it in the pre-amp tubes? rectifier? power tubes? something else entirely?

Sounds like a 12AX7.

weird, I'm with Tony and it sounds like one of your 12ax7s. It does not sound like a rectifier tube but ya never know sometimes tubes have odd malfunctions. It could be a simple seating of one of your tubes. I work each tube in and out of the socket as another diagnostic step before swapping. It could be any of the three tube functions (pre, output, recti) but the preamp tube is the least costly and easiest to diagnose. Also check that the 4 chassie screws are securely tight. Just a simple snug check, over tightening could strip out a mounting screw.
