I'm just curious. I used to own a Shiva and like the way the dirt side sounded but I could never get ANY pedals to sound good thru it no matter how low I set the gain. Absolutely NO headroom. If I were to set the 65 side to a nice ccrunchy rhythm tone would I be able to get a boost out of it? I've played a 6545 at a music store and loved it. I'm trying to decide which Z I want to buy next annd I'm not eexccluding this one from my list.

My 6545 seems to play well with pedals. I mostly play the 65 side of the amp without anything in the signal path but I have tried it with drive pedals and it seems to work well to my ears. In my opinion the 6545 is one of Z's most underrated amps. It's got really thick tone. I am always getting compliments on my tone.

I use a 6545 through a custom 2x12 and have found that the 65 definitely does like pedals. I am currently using a MXR Phase 90, Klon Centaur, Teese Wah, H&K Tube Rotosphere, Fulltone Choralflange CF-1 on my pedal board. All of the pedals mentioned work great with both sides of the amp.
I do believe that the 6545 is the best amp I have ever played through. I got rid of all my other amps when I discovered the 6545. I also use the amp with an airbrake since I like to have the master on the 65 side and the volume on the 45 side set high.

I use a boss ds-1 with the 65 side to add extra crunch. The sound still stays tight and defined.

Absolutely, the 6545 takes pedals very well, both sides 45 and 65. I second the DS-1, but try a Keeley Ultra modded DS-1 and REALLY take advantage of the clarity of the 6545 power section. Its one of the BEST Van Halen I tones around, without blowing 3 grand on a Plexi Marshall that may catch on fire!

The 65 side of the 6545 takes pedals as well as any Marshall Plexi or any of the 4 input Marshalls. Better than a Mesa Recto or 5150 by a long shot. Not as good as the king of the pedal amps the Z-28, Route 66, or KT-45 .... or the 45 side of the KT45.

I just bought a Boss GE-7 Equalizer that I use on the 65 side of my 6545.
I leave the 7 bands alone and use the volume boost to boost the gain going into the amp. I also use it the other way cutting the gain down into the amp for more headroom. For a heavier sound I cut the mids on the eq down a bit and leave the volume of the pedal at normal for a scooped sound.

I owned a Route 66 and Maz 18 Jr NR at the same time a while back and feel the Maz 18 takes pedals far better than the Route 66. The R66 sounds a little bit like running a pedal into a PA to me. It seemed to come alive with pedals only when it was jacked up a bit into an Air Brake (to control volume). But, even then, I think the Maz 18 sounds better with pedals...and no Air Brake is required!
