Trying to decide to Retube my 6545 to get more of a SRZ-65 sound or just buy A SRZ-65. I have a KT-45 for all the clean tones, now trying to get that wonderful SRZ-65 sound!! What tubes would get me in the ball park???

So you have the 6545 and a KT-45 but you want to get the 65 side of the 6545 to sound more like a SRZ-65?
I thought the 65 side of the 6545 was an SRZ-65 without a presence control. Maybe I am wrong...
I love my SRZ-65 though and you wouldn't regret buying one. However, I am sure that various boosts (I prefer Xotic AC) could get you there, especially since some boosts have an EQ. Seems like more fiddling with knobs and tubes could help and maybe a few different pedals.

The 6545 doesn't have a presence knob as you are right, but the 65 side doesn't sound exactly like a SRZ-65. Myles will even tell you that, close but not exactly. I'll try a pedal like you suggest and see what happens. It's still a great amp. Just wondered if it could be done!!

I know more than one Z-Brother that prefers the 6545's 65 side to the SRZ-65

I give the re-tube a shot first as it's probably a little less hassle and money than buying and selling amps. Plus, there are enough tube choices out there that you can probably find some to give a little more presence like the SRZ. I've tinkered with quite a few tube setups in my 6545 and have settled on winged C's (25 watt version) in the power section, a sovtek LPS PI tube, an RFT in V1 of the 65 side, and an NOS Mullard in V2. I've tried Brimars, Telefunkens, Bugle Boys, Ken Rads, RCAs among others but the RFT/Mullard combo is what I settled on. I run the stock Dario EF86 on the 45 side. If you're going to tinker with NOS preamp tubes, here's a decent chart which lists (somewhat accurately, IMO) the characteristics of each tube. I've found this chart very helpful during tube swapping exercises: www.thegearpage.net/board/showpost.php?p=6629145&postcount=17

Thanks for your info! I think you're right about the tube changes, and I'm trying to avoid the buy/sell hassle. I'll order some more tubes and see what happens! Either way it's still a Great Amp and I kinda/sorta don't want to get rid of it anyway!

Well Doug. You've got a good ear for great tone. And you've got a KT45... Sell Mike your 6545 and pickup up a used SRZ and have some change left over to pick up a NOS Rectifier to put in the SRZ. I hear the 65 and SRZ are close but still a bit different. It's all a matter of taste. Your signal is passing through an additional signal path as with any switching amp but, does it really matter in the end? A KT45 and SRZ in stereo would be righteous.

I've thought that already Drew but can't seem to find a used SRZ-65, only new ones! Do you know if the new ones sound as good as the older ones?? I'm trying to see which way to go for the money; sell the 6545 and NOS all the tubes for both the KT-45 and the SRZ-65, or just retube the 6545 & the KT-45 and be done with it!!

Eh Doug, I'm not sure if the newer SRZ65 are different than the new ones but I don't think so. Either way you can't go wrong. If you post an add in the buy sell section you might have a SRZ pop up.

You may want to try a hotter 12AX7? I know that amp uses an EF86 Too? Correct?? The EL34's I'm using are Awesome! They are a NOS Tungsol. I'm using these in an SRZ an OLD SRZ, Try a Boost in the front end, The Timmy or the BB or any pedal mentioned here should get you there. What Speakers are you using by the way, Jamie

I think the difference in sound can be attributed the the transformers used as well.
