I know there have been a million similar threads but I havent quite narrowed this down so I figured I would start another. Basically I am currently using a Egnater Rebel 20 live (after getting sick of a Fender Deville), which sounded fine until I played with a band using a Dr Z and I pretty much decided then that I needed one. They go for a much cleaner tone than I do though. I actually like the Egnater overdriven sound for what I play but it doesnt have enough punch at 20 watts. Basically I play punk/hardcore but want a more "70s crunch" than some horrible Mesa Boogie type sound. Anyhow, listening to the relatively lousy available sound samples I think I have it narrowed down to the SRZ or the Remedy. What I can't tell from the demos though is how these perform in a "non bedroom" environment. Do these start getting an overdriven sound at normal live volumes or would I have to crank them and then get an airbrake to get a good crunch? Also, if there is another amp that people think would work I would love to hear it. I would like to avoid adding a pedal into the mix.

The SRZ can definitely get there. I might suggest checking out a Marshall vintage modern 50W combo as well. I used the 100W head for a long time and still think that is one of the coolest Marshalls short of a plexi. That said, out of the two listed, I like the SRZ.

SRZ has an incredible master volume. The Remedy doesn't.
SRZ is probably the way to go. Other good options- Monza (but kinda less flexible and still might require a airbrake) or 6545 used if you can find one.
For lower volume Plexi sounds I also like the Reinhardt V-50 with power scaling or the Reeves Custom 18 w/ PS.

The SRZ works great at almost all volume levels. I have played some small club gigs with it and the master volume works great. You can get remedy like tones from the SRZ you just have to run less gain and more master volume.

I don't think you can go wrong w/ most of the Z amps for your style. For punk/hardcore sounds you need a rock amp that will cut with a loud drummer....If you don't like pedals the master and gain on the SRZ will be your best friend.....But you can also get those sounds from the Remedy w/ a pedal...I noticed Tracii Gunns getting some kick arse live tones from his stack of Remedies...The SRZ has more of a Marshall JCM 800 thing happening, but more clear and articulate. The Remedy is Plexi like....I know it's hard at times ...but try to play the Z amps if you can...you and your band will not be sorry...... besides.. life is too short for mediocre tone....Buy a Z !!!!!!

Thought I might add one more quip:
The Z amps that take pedals the best, from my personal experience, are the EZG-50 and the Remedy (set fairly clean). (*note*- I have used the MAZ 38 and MAZ Jr without pedals, as well as most of the Z amps in the lineup. So like I say, from my personal playing experience- others may disagree or have tried more amps).
If you are playing loud punk rock, but need the flexibility of lower volumes (on occasion) you might prefer the headroom of an EZG-50 or Remedy WITH various distortion/overdrive/boost pedals.
The SRZ-65, while it does play nicely with gain pedals at certain settings, tends to be pretty "gainy" on its own, so that you may not find much need for pedals. Which I personally find to be a good thing, but if you are trying to use lots of pedals, it might be bad...
Again, hope that helps.

I agree........The SRZ is "gainy" on it's own....I can get a full out metal tone with a TS808 and the gain at 3:00.....The SRZ does clean up well w/ the vol on the guitar...but you do loose a few db. It takes pedals well, but is a little picky of the chain and some pedals just sound like crap....Pedals always sound different with different amps...... The SRZ is pure ROCK....it will also do other styles with no problems...A great amp will always sound great...I better hit the woodshed now, because great gear will only sound as good as I can play...peace out

I missed out on a used Remedy last week. It was sitting on the top of all the other Dr.Z amps that were left (selling like hotcakes here) and was sold pending pick up on the Friday. Well, needless to say, the buyer finally did show up late in the afternoon to take it home, otherwise it would have been mine Saturday morning. Of course I was bummed.
The cool part of this story is that the salesman advised me that there was some gear coming back in on trade (after being out on tour?). I don't recall. Anyway, an SRZ head and ZBest cab are among the equipment on the list.
I'M FIRST IN LINE FOR IT! Please, please keep your fingers crossed for me!
I'll post back here if I get it in the next couple of weeks.
Anyone able to find (or have) any video clips of either the Remedy or SRZ amps? other than what is available on youtube. There are 2 SRZ clips that are able to show me what I want, one from roknfnrol - Thanks dude!
...and then this one, which is more in the line of what I'm after:
What a sweet, sweet sound eh?!
For some reason, I don't think the one Dave Baker did in the studio really displays the A-Z capabilities (sorry for the unintentional pun). I may be wrong and apologize in advance if so.

I know there are a few clips on line, but clips just don't explain the touch sensitivity of the SRZ or relay how it feels to run one through a 4x12 cabinet and feel the air moving at your feet.
I would suggest getting the SRZ and if you decide it is not for you, turn around and sell it and get a Remedy. There are rarely SRZ amps on ebay, which says something about how great they are- people don't part with them regularly. But if you don't like it and decide to sell, the rarity of them turning up used means that you should be able to recover most, if not all of your funds.
But again, I will say the SRZ can cover much of the territory that the Remedy can cover, with more gain and a sweet MV. You just can't go wrong with this amp, it rules!!!

The Remedy is definitely 70's crunch at reasonable volume levels. The SRZ is more 80's JCM800 type sound, . More aggressive and loud. Depending on how much "crunch" you want, you may need an airbrake with either one.

Yeah, I figured on the airbrake. I can't wait to get the call. The funds are lined up and at the ready.
Chants quietly - srz, srz, srz, srz, srz, srz, srz, srz, srz.

When I'm using my SRZ, I never have my Air Brake hooked up to it. The Master Volume is that good. You can get great crunch sounds at pretty low MV settings. I run a stereo rig 99% of the time. I Air Brake my GT and/or my Delta 88. The SRZ's volume gets set w/ the Master. Before I laid out my money for the Air Brake (and you'd need the Air Brake, not the Brake Lite due to the wattage), I'd try the SRZ's MV in home, rehearsal, and gig settings. I really don't think you'd need the Air Brake at all w/ this amp. Now, if you get the amp and love the sound of it w/ the Master wide open (which would be EXTREMELY LOUD), you'll probably want an attenuator. But I'd save the $300-something clams until I gave the MV a try. Great amp.

HA! sendin' you some karma while you wait ( L&M? ).... SRZ-65 is a great amp - definitely on the ol' wish-list for me ... I recall it making nice with heynewguy's Stratocaster at Zfest 07 and also with my Axis Super Sport at Zfest 08 .... plenny loud and strong 'specially with a Zbest .... edit: imho, I agree with the idea of '65 being a more 'modern' sounding experience and the Remedy being a more 70s plexi/rock sound .... both very cool .... definitely you need to use with at least 1 Zbest cab cheers always, eh Joel

Thanks for the Karma Joel, I was wondering what that was about! Back atcha!
Long and McQuade is a music chain here in Canada. L&M is what they are affectionately referred to as. When at the store today, I was advised that the owner of the gear has not returned to town yet but should be back sometime over the weekend. I'm hopeful to have an SRZ by this time next week.

Good luck with the wait @ L&M .... I'll keep my eyes and ears open to see if anything surfaces at the Mississauga/Brampton/Burlington shops, eh

Deal is off.
The perks of working at the music store is that you get "first dibs" on trade in gear.
Guess what?
Well, the Remedy is available again as a result. I will work on getting that home instead.
I have to say, I am bummed as I was sooooo excited to get that SRZ.

Well, you can't go wrong with either amp, really.
The SRZ is just a standout amp in general and the master volume makes it so flexible.
But I have it and a couple other Marshall and "Marshall" type amps and I am still planning on getting a Remedy too. It just plain rules. Remedy will be a great fit, you just might want to try an attenuator and/or pretty inefficient speakers when volume is an issue.

Thanks dude, you know how to make a bro feel better! Karma for you! I did come home with a new matching Z 2x10 extension cab for my MAZ jr combo which helped!
I think I will get the Remedy. I'll be trading the very last piece of rack gear in on it. My beloved Mesa Boogie 20/20 chrome face dynawatt power amp.
If all goes well, I will have that virtually new Remedy head at home next week - (approx 10 hrs play time on it). It will be powering 2 Mesa 1x12 Thiele cabs with the 200 watt EVM12L drivers. Should be cool baby!

Really can't go wrong with either. Master volume on the SRZ is excellent, and I use an airbrake with the Remedy.

Yheard seams to have fallen of the face of the earth.
Anyway, when I think of punk rock I don't think of Gainy tones. I think more of loud overdriven tube amp tones.

Hey Yheard, That would be My 96' SRZ that Roknfnrol did that demo with, It was staright in the amp and he didnt push it to the potential it really has. That amp has been BULLET PROOF! for almost 9-10 years The SRZ was the Flagship of amps , Thats why IMHO! ITS #! check out Zfest this year on the Zfest 2010 Section and listen to the cat named Butch Rip a Tele Through a 2x12 SRZ! serial #1!! YES I was there It was F%@#*&%^ unreal he had the gain DIMED and the Volume! I was sitting three feet from it man my ears were ringing. DRz's amps are loud and besided the Delta 88, the Z is the Second loudest he makes, the EZG may come close but man is it a great amp at all levels, I wishh it had a clean channel, I usually pack 2 amps ( Good Luck you cant go wronng with any Dr Z amp Period!

Using this amp with KT 77's will give you more Volume and More 70's sound I have tried them, I went back to the trusty old EL34B Tunsol NOS ! IT kicks!!! Check this out, I was running my Randall Smith Era Boogie Cabs with EVM/L's and V30's! Lethal Combo with the SRZ! We were playing to a capacity crowd! The SRZ RIPS!

Yes Rickenbacker, THE SRZ is the $#!T !! Ask Rich or Metlrecords The Remedy IMHO I have played but only in a Music store and straight in the amp , It has nice warm Plexish tones like JIMI Hedrix The Wind Cries Mary with a STRAT of course, Its hard to take a pedal board and a fleet of guitars that you own to a store ;D However if your looking for something that RIPs from SRV tones to AC/DC and more The SRZ really Delivers the crunch! I think if you put some Boxes in front of the Remedy It would do what ever you want too. I have heard nothing but GREATNESS abou the Remedy, you'll find the MV on the SRZ find is WOW!!! My SRZ has footswitchable Reverb Too, and adds tons of Depth to the overall sound. Its not really a country clean amp thats for sure.

The only reason I haven't bought an SRZ is I'm waiting to here the Z Wreck. I currently have a Ray and a Maz Jr. I'm thinking a SRZ would go a long way in broadening my tones.
