Sorry for the short outburst but I had to leave for a while.
I bought the Texas Heats originally for the Tremolux because I wanted a more American sounding speaker with big low end. I took a chance on the Heats and love what I got.
I honestly can't tell you if they sound American or not since I haven't played too many non-celestion speakers. I do know that they don't sound a lot like Celestions to me.
Even when I first played these speakers through the Tremolux I noticed that they have a unique midrange response that I really like. When I play the Z28 through these speakers I noticed that their voicing ccomplimented the woody midrange of the Z.
Very nice. I can't wait until i can crank it up a little louder.

I've been playing the amp a lot today and I'm surprised how the voicing of these speakers really narrow the tonal difference between the Z28 and the Route 66 IMO.

Ouch! Is it noticeably less volume at the same point of break up as the route 66. Or is it still too loud for smaller clubs?

Definitely quieter than a 66.
Whether it's too loud would really depend on the club I guess. I could see cranking this up in a small club(I could also see being yelled at too ;D )

OK Laroosco, you've been drawing me in with all this Z-28 talk... time to get you back with a little bait ;D
Have you ever wondered how the Delta 88 would sound through your box with Texas Heats? I noticed you haven't owned that one yet. Have you played one?

I playeed a Delta 88 through a Z Best at a store in Toledo.
I remember that it was a monster of a loud amp and with a Les Pul it gave up some great overdrive quicker than I thought it would. I seem to remember it being a little flatter in the mids than the 66. It was definitely in the 66, 45, Z28 famly. I think I remember it sounding more like the 45 than the other 2. It's been almost a year and I only got to hear the amp for about 10 minutes.
The Delta 88 could get you thrown out of a club and fired from your gig for sure ;D The Route 66 is as loud of an amp as I will ever need

Bad Bad Boys! No, I'm afraid it just aint gonna happen right now. I am, however, going to live the Z28 experience vicariously through you guys! It's interesting listening to the pro guitar site samples in Germany. If that was all I had to base my opinion on I probably would have bought the 28 as the heavy Les Paul clip sounds fantastic to me. Tele62, TerryG and Laroosco, make sure you post of clip of these 28's cranked with the humbuckers. Love to hear it.

The stock 5751 phase inverter gives great Fender Brown Tolex era tones but you can also crank it and get more agressive and focused than a Brown or Black era Fender. With a 12AY7 in the phase inverter you have a lot of clean headroom on tap. On the Oct 1/2 Paisley concerts a Z-28 set up in this manner was used for some of his clean tones. Gary Hooker used a Z-28 for years with Brad and got all sorts of tones from the amp with his pedalboard. With a 12AX7 in the phase inverter the amp gets more agressive and can be a pretty hard rockin' amp to say the least. If somebody does cranked tones for a clip stick a 12AX7 in V2 and then turn the tone controls past 3:00 with humbuckers. Pretty amazing if the volume is at 3:00 or even past that.

I could see cranking this up in a small club(I could also see being yelled at too ;D ) I'd say level wise it is on par with my 4x10 bassman. If you grab an open back 4x10 you can also cop the same tones as my bassman although the Z-28 stays more defined and articulate with pedals that are highish in gain than when the same pedals are fed into a tweed bassman. With the Z-Best 2x10 the Z-28 is louder in measured dBSpl than my bassman but this may be due to the Z 2-10 cab have more efficient speakers than the bassman's P10Rs.

But .... if you are ever in Studio City, near the corner of Laurel and Riverside is a bar called Pat's Place. Pool tables, beer, and lots of cool bikes outside. When there is a band there called "That 70's Band" check it out for a bar sized venue where you can play loud with no complaints. The guitarist in that band generally uses a 100 watt Marshall although for some of the more roudy nights I have seen him use TWO 100 watt heads. Next time he plays he will be using a Delta 88 so we can see what happens. By the way, that player is Jimmy Wigle .... he was Ratts guitarist when one of them died or something and is a pretty heavy player. I think of him as a guy that would work well with a Delta 88.

The thing that interests me with this amp, is that I would eventually love to run two in stereo for cleans and my 66 in the middle for dirt A/b pedal. But it would also be useful as an aggresive amp to cover my route 66 in smaller venues, and also as a clean amp to run with pedals for a coverband/small club amp. Sounds like I could carry a 12ax7, a 12ay7, and a 5751 and just pop in whichever PI suits the need and have it cover alot of bases, which also makes it more justifiable. Venues just keep getting smaller here and it's a bit of a worry.

OK, I tried a NOS ratheon 12AX7 in my 28 for a PI, It made the amp WAY brighter..in a bad way to me, took away all the warmth..tried a Lester, Strat and Tele...no Bueno, also tried a GT 12AX7M..same results...stuck the 5751 back in..mucho better to my ears, FWIW. Thanks Jaye, I'll send ya a couple more soon....of the ghia with a little sprinkle of Z 28.
