Hello world, From what I can tell, the Z28 is currently delivered with an NOS RCA 5751 as its PI. Nice, I like it and have used that tube more than once in various amps. My 6545 originally shipped with an EH12AX7LPS as its PI, and in the interest of killing cats (I'm merely curious) I will be trying a long plate 12AX7 as a PI in my Z28. I'll also try a GT12AX7M for grins. The long plate I have is a balanced-by-Myles GT12AX7R2 (the M is also balanced by him....shucks, what a guy!); if memory serves this is the same Russian tube that EHX brands as their LPS. Let's discuss observations/experiences/101 uses for ex-felines. Cheers! ps, is it me or is that Carmen Ghia forum way busy? Us Z28 folks must be out *playing* or something (OK, I don't really hate cats, and I'm only shooting across the Ghia bow in a childish act as I don't have one yet. Brotherly love at its finest.)

I have some thoroughly unscientific observations: - stock 5751: nice all-around, good character, full sounding without being aggressive. This is a GE, and not an RCA as I previously mentioned. At least that's what my initial notes say. - GT12AX7R2: aggressive, "brighter" kind of sound, I think I'd go to this one if I sounded dead or needed to really punch through. Nice one for the toolkit, to say the least. - GT12AX7M: didn't seem as aggressive as the R2, but it felt stronger than the 5751 (as expected). Seems "creamier" or perhaps more [low] middley. I liked this one a lot. The distortion characteristic seemed fuller than that of the 5751, but not as crispy as the R2.
I totally changed the way I set the amp as I kept noodling as well. Volume way up, Bass/Treble below 12 o'clock - this let me roll my guitar volume/tone back for good clarity, and when I cranked the guitar it really drove nicely (dual humbucker semi-hollowbody). If I were needing more drive I only needed to bump the treble on the amp, for instance. Everything is very responsive. I think I'll gig with the GT12AX7M this weekend.
Last I checked I was running the RCA 6V6GTY pair at 364V, 26mA. I'm too tired to check that now, I need to catch some Zzzzs.
