If you're talking 70's rock, it is perfect. If you're talking triple-recto, it's not quite there. Think JCM-800 and you're pretty close.

Think of things where a Marshall 2204 was used that you like.

thanks myles - i have also seen a lot of stuff about jmp's, plexis, and even a touch of hiwatt. i think with some good pedals pushing the front, there should be no problem. if not theres always the rt66...
btw myles - i'm new to the forum, and just wanted to thank you for all you do. i read all of your posts, and have your site bookmarked.
thanks again - tommy

thanks blair, thats a nice arsenal ya got goin there. tommy Thanks Tommy - coincidentally I've had a few ladies lately comment on my nice arsenal... ;D My band just finished recording some new songs using my older SRZ-65. When they are fully done, I'll try to post some clips. One song sorta has a classic rock vibe. The other kicks it up to early Metallica territory - the amp handled it all real well! Cheers, Blair

I'm actually going to use my 6545 (mostly the 65 side) for an 80's hair metal thing. Sounds amazing - one channel, gain rhythm (could do leads w/it), roll the volume back for some clean and kick in a boost (OCD set for light gain/volume bump) and you're into sweep arpeggio heaven. Glorious.

thanks guys - i actually find it kinda funny that not a lot of guys are talking more about the heavy sounds this amp can do. i think it goes way beyond a 70's classic rock vibe(which i also love). the great thing about this amp is that it will do older vintage marshall sounds, but i know of more than a few very heavy bands who used 2203's & 2204's w/great results. i just got my le#24 on thursday, and am blown away at how aggressive this sucker is. i'm tryin to find a way to tame the volume w/speakers, caus the airbrake is great, but it is still really, really loud. thanks again guys. tommy

tw6t6, congratulations on #24. Yep, it's a loud amp.
I'm curious as to how you'd compare it to the Rte 66.

I'm curious as to how you'd compare it to the Rte 66. Night and day... Bassman/JTM45 (R66) vs. JCM800 (SRZ65)

thanks zimmer- i was gonna say route 66 cleans up to a big fender sound. i think i got the perfect combo of marshall sounds w/these 2 amps. the 66 is real aggressive also, just in a different way. with some od pedals you could cover a lot of ground w/a 66 alone. im still feelin out the srz, but i really like it a lot so far. def in the 800 zone, but more versatile imo.
btw - either of you guys swapped out any tubes?
thanks tommy

I tried a 5751 in V1 but I didn't care for it. Then I discovered the secret to a beautiful clean tone - turn the guitar down. Sounds amazing that way.

No tube swaps yet, but I do have a rectifier from nitehawk55. I haven't tried it, but I can't say why that is so. Laziness, perhaps. Happy with the sound.
Playing with the Galaxie a good bit, now that I've found a sweet spot. A very loud sweet spot with a V1 that works well.
Life is good.

I have some of NightHawks rect. tubes....put it in the amp! Its like having the winning lotto ticket and not cashing it in...you will be amazed at the difference.... NightHawk has had some great rect. I picked up two phillips, NOS and the difference is now rectifiyingly rectifed.....in short...big improvement in dynamics ....and that "something".//

fishman, thanks for the shove in the right direction. I buy an occasional lottery ticket just for the daydream, which is worth a buck or two here and there.
Jon had sent me a Philips-boxed GZ34, and I put it in a drawer. Lately I'd been giving the Galaxie more time, both out of the novelty and for a certain liquid character that the SRZ didn't share.
I've been sitting on a small treasure without really understanding it. The SRZ is suddenly richer, has more gain than ever, and is not at all harsh. Now the amp begs to be turned up, where before its volume would have folks run for cover. It's now righteously harmonic.

thanks zimmer - thats really good to know, because i've been having a problem taming the volume, and it did seem a bit harsh, bright and...stiff? i dont know, but i think you know what i'm talking about. i have to give that a try. thanks again- tommy

Looking through some of these threads.
The SRZ does like to be turned up. Heck, all of these amps are different animals when played at committed volume. The SRZ is no exception, and wants to be let out of the cage to run. I've gone back and forth between different cabinets and instruments, and I've settled on taming the treble and presence a bit, volume (master) at 11, and gain somewhere between 11 and 3, for the most part. Of course, it helps to then airbrake it a bit.
But it also seems to enjoy aggressive playing with a heavy picking style. It's not my mellow low-volume amp. It can do that, but it doesn't feel happy doing it.
Too much anthropomorphizing, perhaps.

Thanks for that post, i've been researching Dr. Z amps and this is the amp I've set my mind on. It sounds like that amp just want's to rock and is a good building block for tone with some pedal's... I just have to be patiant I guess...

The SRZ sounds better the harder it's pushed!!! It will go into pure Hi Gain Bliss with a great Tube driven pedal in front of it such as a Tube King, Real Tube, Plexi Tube, etc... I use my SRZ for tones from 70's hard rock to Nickel Back! The best thing? People look at it and go??? What the F$@&!!!!!!!!!!

I agree. After all Kerry King plays through a JCM800. The SRZ has more clarity and bottom (of course, speaker choice will have an impact).
