How good is the Jaz Master Volume. Does this amp distort well?. Without blowing out your windows

I guess that with the Brake Lite pre installed you could frop the mouth watering tone to 1 watt! However I ll have to testify on this this Friday! My JAZ has come home but I m out of town! Bummer!

this amp has such a sweet sweet breakup! i can t still believe it but my drool can t be controlled with the tone with the master down and the volume up you re in for a treat if you drop the volume and crank the master then the power tube distortion kicks in ...a whole other beast... still sweet too the amp is classy and responsive just what i was looking for! with the brake lite you can have all this nice tones at more polite volumes and keep them tubes cookin'!

I have mixed feelings about the breakup tone of this amp. It seems to work really well for some things and not so well for other things. It has a bit of a harsh edge to it at low volumes with the master. It really shines when cranked, but it is very loud at that point. The breakup definitely works better at high volumes. At low volumes there can be some sharp tones in the top end and it is sorta loose and papery; not smooth. But, most of this is just personal preference type stuff. I really couldn't stand the TIM and the breakup of this amp reminds me of that pedal somewhat.
I've been finding that I like the breakup tone for playing rhythm, but not for playing single note lines. With the master it sounds better on the lower three strings than on the top three.

I think that if you have the brake lite installed in the combo you can enjoy better harmonix/breakup at more polite volumes definately gig friendly IMO it s still loud for the bedroom if you crank it. I tend to enjoy cranking volume and master in half power mod with the Brake lite on, it puts out this thick overdrive that still cleans up pretty well... i seldom have the treble knob over 11 o'clock anyway...

I was experimenting with using the amp for a singing lead today. I just cranked the volume and used the master to control the volume. The master volume works great on this amp compared to my other amp. Although, it seemed whether I had the master cranked along with it, or at a more ear friendly volume, the only way I could get a nice non fizzy lead was to turn all the eq knobs down almost all the way. When I did though it was freaking sweet singing lead.

Although I don't own a Jaz 20/40, I have found that with more extreme settings via a Master Volume or an attenuator (or both) onboard EQ can really help "correct" what your ears are hearing. My SRZ-65 sounds great even a incredibly low volumes, but may require boosting some lows to sound/feel right.
The other thing is that my impression of the Jaz 20/40 is that it is more of a chunky rhythm machine and less of a high-gain/low volume amp, especially without a brake lite or airbrake. But it seems pretty amazing to me...excellent for gigging I am sure!

Ok, that makes sense and kinda answers my question. I was just noticing that I needed much less eq at higher volumes and wanted to make sure I wasn't cutting anything I shouldn't be. I started another thread asking where people keep their eq for a "flat/natural" guitar sound, but I'm thinking now that it changes depending on vol and master settings.
