I was playing my SRZ-65 last night and noticed something interesting - I accidentally plugged it into the Airbrake instead of the Hot Plate, and although it was a hell of a lot louder, it was also a LOT cleaner. This has me wondering about what the Hot Plate might be doing to the sound of the amp, so I decided to do some experiments, but dang this thing is loud. Through the Golds, it's devastatingly loud! So that got me thinking about how to deal with that and I realized I have some THD Yellowjackets here. Yellowjackets are adapters that change your Class A/B fixed bias amp into cathode biased and instead of your regular tubes you're running EL84's. Yeah baby, an 18 watt SRZ-65! I posted over on Myles "ask" forum if he thought they'd work, and he thinks they will, so I practically ran down to the studio when I got home to try it. Unfortunately, I can't. With the EL84 on top of the Yellowjacket adapter, it's about 1/8" taller than the available space. DRAT! The only way they are going in there is if I take out the screen just above the tubes. I'll probably do that for a temporary test, but I don't want to leave that out of there. Dang, I really wanted to hear that right away - might get to it later tonight.

Well the Yellowjackets weren't all that exciting. It works, but makes the amp sound like ka ka. So we be going back to the big bottles and I have to come up with a different strategy to get the thing reigned in... I really like its sound with the Airbrake, but I think maybe the Golds are just too efficient for such a powerful amp. Thinking maybe something that is down around 97db or less - that would help a LOT!

Been wondering about doing the same thing but never had the time to do it.Thanks for the report benttop. ;D Well besides the fact that they didn't really sound all that great, I had to pull the chassis to get them in there. Turns out the grill above the tubes is stapled in, and I didn't want to disturb that. So if I had LIKED it, I would have had a real conundrum about how to keep them in there.

Another speaker that comes to mind for "less efficient" decibel ratings, might be a Scumback, or two. Some of them are in the 96 or 97db range.

Well I have a pair of Weber Ceramic Blue Dogs here - anyone know what kind of sensitivity they are? Doesn't seem to say on the Weber page. Thinking about the sound of this amp, I was thinking these Blue Dogs actually might sound pretty good. Think I'll try one just for fun.

The Weber Blue Dog 50w alnico really tames the beast for me. I'm running a 1x12 cab and airbrake on 2-3. I have the 65 volume control at 12:00 Gain at 11:00 - 1:00. I can't do that with any other speakers (ceramic) in my arsenal. Swamp Thang & 6545 = paint & plaster removal.

Hi Benttop -
I e-mailed Ted Weber a couple months back about the sensitivity of Blue Dog/Silver Alnicos and Ceramics and this is the info he e-mailed me.
AlNiCo Blue and Silver 15 100 30 99 50 98
Ceramic Blue and Silver 15 102 30 101 50 100
I hope this helps.

I've been using my SRZ LE through a single V30. Talk about loud, but I never have the master past 9, 9:30, and use the gain for tone structure, and a little bit of pedal for that extra zing! What a terrific sounding amp!

Well I had this set of ceramic Blue Dogs here from Weber - 50 watt 16 ohms each. I remember they got real warm when they broke in, which, in the Mazerati, was not what I was looking for. But I have them, and they are all broke in. I started thinking about this 1x12 cab I got from Drew with a pretty beat up V30 in there - I decided to yank that V30 and put one of the Blue Dogs in there and give it a whirl this morning. Wow, this is pretty close to what I'm hearing in my head! With the top end pretty warmed up by the speaker, and the speaker being maybe a couple db less sensitive than the Golds, it was WAY closer to the sound I want. Very cool! You see, this is why my studio looks like a music store exploded there - if I had sold those speakers, I wouldn't have them to try this! Anyway, I'm thrilled at the sounds I was just getting down there. Very different from the RXES, but also very cool. I wonder if anyone makes an A/B/C/D/E/F/G/H/I/Y pedal?

Steve, If they do you'd be the guy I'd bet on to find it !! Hehehe.... well I do have one of these: but that's only four amps! Of course if I haul any more than that out to a gig I'm going to have to have my own entourage....

I had an email exchange with Ted, as well, and he has the 75 watters now available. I've been thinking that an open back 2x12, with a Blue and Silver alnico pair might be tasty.
