For recording I usually run my srz-65 (one of the old ones) with the pre-amp at about 1:00, Master just a little shy of all the way up, Presence at Noon, Bass at 11:00, Mids at 1:00 and Treble at 12:30. I play with p-90's and it sounds pretty good but I feel like that was too easy, last night I started trying all kinds of settings, some were good, some were bad but I think my ears got too fatigued to even tell before I found anything better than my current settings. Anyone else have a good starting point for trying something a little different?

so a real question ... is this amp set up to where when the tone controls are maxed there is zero attenuation and the treb, mid, bass gets attenuated as you roll counter-clockwise, or is noon "zero" and you bust or cut? ... or maybe it's all the same ... thoughts?

Yeah, she's a bright amp. I stuck a Weber Blue Dog (ceramic) in a 1x12 cab and that helped tame the top end. You can get away with a lot of edge when you're recording, but on a gig it will slice concrete.

I haven't taken the time to record that configuration yet. I'll do one next week - busy all weekend.

If you want to take a bit of edge off the brighness do what we did on one of Carl's two SRZs .... the one that is currently trouring with him in Europe has a 12AX7R2 (Sovtek LPS) in V1 that was picked for that amp out of a batch of them.

Actually I have been intending to get down in the basement and do a load of tube testing on the SRZ but I don't have the tubes in hand yet. I think as good as it sounds, I want a few tweaks, like the top end. And I don't quite need as much gain, so I've been thinking about some 5751's somewhere (wherever it gives the effect I'm looking for). And of course you had to mention those KT77's... oh my! THAT sounds like something I just have to try. Have to get them in hand though!

Interesting ... I don't find my SRZ to be all that bright, but I guess guitar, cab/speaker, and pedals also make a difference. For me: Fender MIM HSS Strat with a Duncan '78 EVH in the bridge > Klon Centaur ( gain-10:00,treble-1:00,output-1:00 ) > Maxon AD-999 ( no delay, really; just set to add some "ambient grease" ) > SRZ ( presence-1:00,bass-12:00,middle-1:00, treble-2:00, master-11:00,gain-1:00 ) > Mojave 4X12 cab with G12H-30s. For additional volume control, I also use a Hot Plate, usually set to -4 or -8db, and a variac, set around 95-100v ... I like it!!
