After a few more days of playing, I have made some more observations about the SRZ-65. First, the amp seems to be a bright amp. I am currently running my bass around (clock face numbers) 3 o'clock, mids and treble around 10-11, and presence around 7 (almost off completely). I'm not sure if this is a result of the amp, speakers, or just the fact that the speakers are not broken in yet.
I really like the amps tone with the gain set low to mid level. I guess as I've gotten older, I don't like to run wide open gain all of the time like I did in my 5150 Half-Stack days. Also, I find that this amp responds really well to both Volume and Tone pot settings on the guitar. I have typically been a "set-it-and-forget-it" type of player when it comes to volume and tone...everything on 10 because I always felt too much tone was lost any other way. However, this amp responds magically to even slight changes and I'm really digging the tonal possibilities here. I guess I just needed an amp that actually had tone to begin with!
Another sound I'm enjoying is with a ToadWorks Mr. Ed pedal. The SRZ-65 plays very nicely with pedals and there is no front-end squash happening.
Anyway, my only complaint right now is that I am traveling on business all week and my Z is just sitting at home with no one to play it.
I'd be interested to hear others' responses as well about their SRZ-65s.

I have an SRZ-65 on order that should arrive in a few days and I can't wait. I have been using a Z-28 for about 6 years and have decided to try something a little more high gain. As far as responding to volume pot tweaks, does it tend to get muddy when the volume is turned down? Being a Z, I would expect not. I'm sure it will be a magical experience like the Z-28 was when I first heard it!

sonicgator, I have my SRZ-65 controls set pretty much as you describe, maybe a hair more mids and treble, and the presence higher. you can see how I set it for use with a Les Paul and my Z 2x10 in this pic. what type of cab are you using? I found my Z-best to be pretty bright when it first arrived, but it mellowed very nicely with age. BTW, my Z-Best cab in the pic is for sale in the emporium...

I'm using the Z-Best as well, but it's a brand new cab, so I'm figuring some more rockin' time will sweeten up the speakers.

For both of you.... Try turning the master to 4:00 or even all the way up and use the gain as a normal volume control and watch what happens! The other side benefit of this is very high output level pedals can be used if desired and the front end is affected or squashed little if at all. But .... turn the gain (volume now in this almost non-master mode) to about 11:00 and you might never want a pedal again

Of course, there's always the plexiglass screen/shield infront of the speaker to stop the directional nature of the speaker.
Or, you can put the cab in a completely different location (closet, back room, backstage).
Or, build an isolation box - hardwire some mics on goose necks inside a box and put the cab in there - just plug in and go.

thanks. all good ideas. my problem is that i'm in a 1 bedroom apartment, wiyh people above, below and on both sides of me. once i'm playing in a band situation, i'll want this thing big and loud, but for now, i want to play this amp every day, with at least some of the beauty of it opened up a bit. am i crazy? one of the problems is my z best has an eminence swamp thang, & wizard. thats 150 watt cab

"With at least some of the beauty of it opened up..."
That's a tall request for a fella with a Z-Best and an SRZ in an apartment, even with an airbrake and a master volume amp. The character of the amp changes with the volume above say, 11 o'clock, regardless of where you set the gain. The NOS rectifier swap might get some earlier beauty, as well.
But if you're up for a speaker swap, some of Ted Weber's higher watt Blue Dog/Silver Bells are less efficient, and might tame the volume. The Swamp Thang and the Wizard are rated at 102 and 103 db. If you go for stuff with a 97 db rating, you will cut the volume significantly. Scumback has some in this ballpark as well. Ted Weber answers emails, and so does Jim Seavall.

yep.. the SRZ is definitely not an apartment amp. I sold mine for a ghia for this reason but I regret letting go of the SRZ (especially since I have a townhouse now w/ a basement...) - it's such a special amp. If I were you I'd pick up a cheap 1x12 cab as mentioned above and throw a single greenback in there. Some sort of sound proofing is probably in order but that can be tricky in an apartment. Renting a rehearsal space with some friends/bandmates is always a good idea as well. Whatever you do.. don't get rid of it!
