Here's my story. All my Z's (except for the Mini) have 10's. 2 combo's and a 2x10 cab. I love the 10's. But need to figure out what cab I'm going to get with my SRZ. According to Doc I can't go wrong either way. He said the 4x10 is a little more "Classic Rock" and with the Z-Best it's a little more modern. Unfortunately I love both tones!! HELP! I'm leaning a little toward the Z-Best, only because I already have 10's.

What speakers will be in the Best? I really like the 6545 through a 1x12 ported cab with a Texas Heat. I haven't tried it through the 2 10's in my Maz Jr. combo yet, but I think I will...

Vintage 30 and G12H. I'm not much on speaker swapping.

Oh man, this has been the big quandary. I've actually been thinking about an open back 2x12 with Golds in it. But that's an expensive cab configured like that - over $1100! But that's what I paid for my 2x12 with the Blues in it (before the latest pricing). So.... It has been that, or a 1x12 with a Gold, or a 2x10, or 2-2x10's, or a 4x10, or.... I CAN'T MAKE UP MY MIND!

Well, I want a 4x10.
I've got an open back 1x12 with a C.Rex, and it's 24" wide. Plenty meaty and smooth, I say.
I want a 4x10 for the SRZ, and possibly the amp that comes afterwards.

I'm going for a 1x12 with a C-Gold. I was thinking about a 4x10 for a while but I want to cut down on volume and weight (I'm not sure if the Gold will be any less loud than the 4x10 to be honest. Blues are loud, right?). The 2x12 combo I got is way louder than I need practically, so I think using one speaker will allow me to crank it a bit more. Correct me if I'm misguided?

It won't let you crank it that much more. Also, I don't know about a gold with that amp. I have a ceramic Weber Blue Dog - I know it isn't exactly the same, but I think it is voiced in a similar manner. I don't like it with my 6545.

I've got an older SRZ-65 head, a Z-Best 2x12, and Z's 2x10 cab.
I really prefer the mids I get from my 2x10 over the Z-Best. I might like a little more low end, but I bet you'd get that from the 4x10. I completely I agree with what Dr. Z said. The Z-Best is a more modern tone, less mids and more bottom and top. The 2x10 is more of an open, classic (rock) tone.
I voted for the 4x10.

What's missing on the Dr. Z Web site is any information about the open back 2x12. I'm curious how much it weighs, just for comparison. The 4x10 weighs 48 lbs. OW, my aching back! The 2x10 and 1x12 are 30 lbs. Now that's more like it! I have the 2x12 open back here - maybe I'll throw it on the scale to see where it comes in at. It feels a bit on the heavy side - heavier than my THD 2x12 open back anyway, but of course it's a bigger cab too, and it has a bit more complexity in how it's constructed.
Weight is going to be just as big a factor for me as tone. If it sounds great, but I never take it out because it's too heavy, it moots the point. This is what happened with my THD 4x12 - it is easily one of the best 4x12's out there. But at 100 lbs., it RARELY makes an appearance at a live gig. Those 30 lb. cabs look very enticing from this old guitarist's perspective.

All I know is Mudskipper has a C-Gold and a plexi clone (a November) and he really likes the combination. But I'll also see what Dock thinks because he's looking at the same amp/speaker combo as I am.

Time to break out the quady with greenies. I can't believe no one's even mentioning it! The studio next to my house has a fantastic old 60's Marshall quad that used to belong to my guitar teacher. If someone sends me their SRZ65LE I'll gladly report how it sounds through an old quad box with vintage greenbacks! ;D ;D I'll mail it back...I promise!

Time to break out the quady with greenies. I can't believe no one's even mentioning it! true. somewhere in this forum is a comment from Dr. Z about how greens are his favorite speakers with the SRZ-65. I think all the original SRZ-65 2x12 combos were open back with Celestian Greenbacks.

Does anyone know if the Good Dr. will sell one of his cabinets without speakers? I have two brand new Celestion G12M Greenbacks that I need to install in a cabinet. I would love a Z-Best cabinet.

I was thinking of using C-Gold with my SRZ65 as soon as it arrives next week.So far,SRZ65 sounds great with Z best 2x12,yes,not the typical classic tone like 4x12 or 4x10 cabs. Now,an old quads cab with greenbacks is another story.

Well I think I'm going to use my THD 4x12 to start. That cab is hella heavy, but sounds fantastic. Then I'm going to test everything I already have here, and decide if I want to take it any further. Jeez, I have two 2x12's, a 4x12, a 1x12, a 4x10, and a 1x15 here. You would think that somewhere in that mess there just might be a cab that sounds great with the SRZ. Then if I find I like one of them, I can save that cash for another amp! I'm already jonesing for a small combo...

It's still a beauty too! I wish my Bro in law would get his DRZ 4-10 fixed He said it sounds fine so it's not really an issue at the moment but it's gotta sound alot better with all 4 working surely! (one speaker is not working)

Well I think I've decided on a 2x12 open back with Golds. It's more than I wanted to spend, but it's also the configuration I really want. I'm pretty sure it'll be perfect for me.

I wish I'd had my old 4x12 Soldano cab w/ v30's on top and Lead 80's on bottom when I had my SRZ. I bet it would've sounded nice through that cab - sounded great with my AC50.

Gotta put in a vote for a Z-Best. Just a great cab, I think I need 2 of 'em. Sounds amazing with my JCM800. Should sound equally amazing with SRZ 65.

A lot of my Marshall folks love the Z-Best after they try it for the first time and many prefer it to their 4x12 closed back cabs in many applications. If you have the space and $$$$ having both cab types is pretty nice.
