Well after listening to Buddy tear it up with an SRZ-65 on his new CD, I decided to leave the RXES home tonight and take the SRZ instead. So I double-headed it with the Stingray into the stereo Alnico golds. Man I don't know why I waited so long. That thing was just SCREAMING! What a great sounding rock amp! It was quite a bit different live than I expected it to be, and that is a fortunate thing because it sounded even better with the band than it does in my basement. That's what I'm talking about! Now I have no idea how I'll manage to decide what to take out each time I play - too many great amps here!

Very cool. I say take ALL of your amps. You can have the 80's Hair-Band wall of amps thing going on, wear some leather pants, and jump off some risers on the stage.

Its a great live amp...however for me I think the 6545 would be the ultimate gigging amp with an attenuator.

Here is my setup from last night. I plan to use the same setup tonight. The business end. Last night's stage. The sound company had a nice PA! The 40 channel Allen & Heath board. Kind of overkill for us, but it sounded pretty good. The monitor board. That's my Grosh Retro Classic VT there too.

Man, I'm so jealous Steve, I love outdoor concerts where a guitar player can crank it up . Thanks for sharing the moment, brings back many fond memories.

I really had to crank last night. That canopy reflected the drums right down on top of us. Before we started, I was doing a bit of a sound check and the bass player was telling me it was WAY loud. But when the band started, I had to push the Stingray Airbrake all the way up to Thru, and the SRZ Airbrake up to -2 clicks. We were smoking! Just don't bother to call me on the cell phone today - all you would get is "huh?"

Dang Steve, according to Google Maps that's a 40 hour drive from my house . I need more warning next time ;D. You didn't miss anything. About three hours before show time, the rain started. By the time we played, it had been raining steady for all that time, and most of the crowd had gone home. The PA was sitting out in the rain, and the crowd that was left were all huddled under the tent where the sound guy was. I don't think there were ever more than 50 people there, and we played the whole last set for about ten. What a wasted evening.

I am used to playing to 10. I always feel dumb pumping out all those db's for ten folks. As far as the rig goes, I struggled a bit last night. After two sets I made some changes and the SRZ was working considerably better. I had the preamp volume wide open and the master at about 6, and it sounded great but I wasn't getting any dynamics. I turned the preamp down to noon and pushed the master all the way up and that did the trick. Now I can't wait to try it again to see how it behaves in more familiar territory.

I felt bad you guys came down and the whole second set had really nothing that featured guitar work other than strong rhythm playing. Hope you heard something you liked... I've been with this band since about 1991, so that makes it 16 years for me... yikes! Yeah, we used to be the house band at the Firwood Tavern in Fife. When I joined, we were playing there three weekends a month, Friday and Saturday. So a lot of folks from the south Puget Sound region saw us there.

Thats a long time for any band to be together... I actually joined them while they were celebrating their 20th year. So this year is their 36th year! There are still two original members in the band. Wild...

My SRZ doesn't say pre-amp and gain I'm guessing you guys mean " gain down , volume up ? I've been toying with mine in the music room with the gain dimed and the volume cracked open a bit . I have not tried the airbrake yet so I probably have a lot to learn about this amp although it sounds pretty hot cranked that way , kind of a Hendrix vibe ;D Man it can get LOUD !!!!!

Hey Steve what kind of speaker cable are you using on your rig?

Post by benttop (Steve) on Oct 19, 2008 20:14:26 GMT -7
Another blast from the past! One of those neighborhood music in the parks things during the summer. The Geritol crowd is indeed the fan base we still appeal to... Those are 12 AWG 6-foot cables made by... ah, here it is: Quantum Audio Designs. It says Q-4112 Oxygen-Free Speaker Cable on them. My bet is Todd at Procables n Sound ( www.greatcables.us) can make up something almost identical, but you'll get personalized service in the deal.
