Hi everyone I'm new to Dr Z and the forum. I have a chance to get into a 2000 Mazerrati head and Z best cab. I don't know much about the early models or the amp for that matter and was interested in hearing more about it. I've read some post here very informative indeed. I'm attaching a picture to show the amp, it's black and gold with gold piping very beautiful.
Thank you

Hi, you probably already know that there is a version 1 and a version 2 Mazerati. Not sure what year the change was made, but my guess is you have a version 1. Also, I'm not 100% accurate on my Z history, but I think that the customer who wanted a "higher powered Carmen Ghia" was Joe Walsh.
My recommendation is that you play the amp and see if its right for you. I just got a Mazerati and have only gigged it twice .... but it sounds real nice.

My apologies for the double post but I had to I'm really excited... Shes MINE and she is the best sounding amp I've played PERIOD. I have waited years to find a sound like this. I've been through many brands and I can't believe I waited this long to discover the Z. It's a 2000 1st edition Mazerati in mint condition with a mint Z best cab from the same year. I would have never believed a two knob amp could produce the sound the Mazerati does...WoW! Thank you Dr. Z

Thank you... The more I play and look the better she gets. It takes balls to build an amp like this two knobs can do the job of twenty it's amazing. There is beautiful hand made copper work on the back plate and other wonderful features. I'll be posting some amp porn in the pics section soon. This amp is top notch hand made quality in the most simplistic form...STUNNING! I don't see myself playing any other I will no doubt be back for more.

Mine is also a 2005 and I just assumed it was a second generation. Not that I really care. I love the tone and thats all that matters, but it would be cool to know.

Mine is a 2000 that was a typo...DER From what I've read somewhere in 2005 is where they switched. I could be wrong.

I have been looking for a 1st generation Mazerati for some time now. If yours is a 2000 it might possibly be a 1st generation. The Good Doctor began making the 2nd generation in 2000. Yours has the chicken knobs and different script then the present models so you might have a 1st generation. The best way to know for sure is to take some pics of the inside; make sure to get close-ups of the transformer. When Doc made the change he beefed-up the transformer and made some other adjustments. Send him the pics and the serial number and he'll let you know. I here the biggest difference from generation 1 to 2 is V2 has a tighter low-end and perhaps a little less gain. I would prefer more gain and less bottom... thus my pursuit of a 1st generation. If you confirm you have a 1st generation and want to sell her send me a PM. Thanks, Merks.

I thought 2003 was the transition year V1 to v2?

It is probably the "official" transition year but Doc was making them in 2000. I just sent him some pics of a 2001 that turned out to be a V2. He said he started making them in 2000. Merks,

The good Dr. sent this back to me within five minutes very cool... She wont be for sale, I truly like this amp. "I'm glad you like it. Yes I modified Brad Paisleys Mazerati on ( 9/11/2001 ), yes the date is correct he canceled his show that night and visited me. So since the first Ver 2 Mazerati was born in 2001 your's is truely a Ver 1, enjoy....." Z

Oh, that's definitely defective. Actually, both the amp and that Tele on the right there have major problems. Send them to me at once and I will get them fixed up for you in a jiffy - prolly have them back within five years or less! Don't delay, hurry!

Address please Man I love the EL84 break-up it's smooth and very musical. It starts to break up at 9 instead of 12 it's cool. I use the volume knob to clean it up VERY Trainwreck-esque. The guitar on the right is my 1999 Telesonic with a Bigsby not visible, it's a wicked instrument.

No all good Mark it's not the greatest video in the world but I was more than excited ;D I say in the video that the breakup was around 12 bit in reality it's well before. It's very sensitive to how you play, the dynamics are SWEET! She has a brass chassis with copper inlay. very nice looking. I should have been clearer on that. Thanks

it sounds fantastic even on the computer speakers! It's giving me GAS! lol. I know we all certainly share in your excitement! This forum is a slower pace than the TDPRI as you mentioned in your post over there. It is a small community of some of the greatest people you can find! Congrats again!

No disrespect in any way, and thanks I feel very welcomed. I was just playing and it's an awesome feeling knowing that I can dump most of my pedals. I might keep the wha and the Full Drive but man MAJOR EARGASM>

There's just nothing that sounds quite like a Mazerati with a Tele in the front. That was great!

It's a good place, made some great online friends there but it is just a bit too crowded for me now. Anyway, please do more vids! LOL, love your setup. I have the Maz Jr and love its tone! Like Steve said, and I gotta agree, there isn't nothing like a Mazerati or any Z for that matter, with a tele in front!

Would there be a way to get more clean headroom from her? I like the crunch but could use just a bit more headroom. She also is a bit noisy there is a slight hum and hiss when turned past 9. It's not obnoxious but noticeable in recordings. The EL84s are newer so don't think it's the tubes. Do the Mazeratis run loud?
Thanks

Thanks The ver1 Mazeratis were not as clean as the ver2 so it may be the nature of the beast as far as your clean headroom goes...you might try lower gain preamp tubes for more headroom and/or a solid state rectifier. For the noise I would swap the preamp tubes with known good ones and see if that helps...and just because el84's are new you could still have one that isnt up to par.

Originally I was looking for a ver1 Mazerati but I'm very glad it worked out that I ended up with a ver2 as the bands I'm in are fairly loud and I really welcome the extra clean headroom. As well its supposed to have a bit more bottom end which is something that like as well.
