Does the 65 side of the 6545 sound the same as the SRZ-65? I heard the SRZ65 has one more preamp stage over the 65 side of the 6545. Anyone tried both amps?

flem,
I know that Myles has tried both side by side with Carl Verheyen. His assessment was that the SRZ-65 was a hair gainier than the 65 side of the 6545. I know that the comparison is on the site somewhere. Have not found it though.

A bit more gain(ier).
Thanks guys ;D
I read the 45 side sounds slightly different than a KT 45 as well. I'd be interested in seing the schematics for the 6545, KT45 and SRZ65 just to see how the DR integrated the [65][45] together.
Enough typing, only thing better than Z chatting is Z playing! Which reminds me my amp has been warming up for 10 mins now, should be good and primed....

I've had both amps. Here are the differences I perceived:
The SRZ65 I had ran at significantly higher plate voltage than the 6545 I had - around 50 volts higher. The SRZ was louder and tighter, maybe as a result of this difference.
The 65 side of my 6545 had more "give" and warmth to it (even with a solid state rectifier installed) than the SRZ. The SRZ was a slightly "harder" sounding amp than the 65 side of the 6545.
The SRZ had more midrange available than the 65 side, while the 65 side had more bass available than the SRZ. I used to run the 65 side of the 6545 with the bass nearly off or all the way off, and the mids dimed. That made for a great sound. With the SRZ, the bass and mid controls seemed to have more useable range for me than the 65 side of the 6545.
Both were/are stellar amps, and I would have been happy to make either one my No. 1, were it not for my DST U34-CL. That amp just does the trick for me as far as loud EL34-based amps go.

The SRZ has the same front end as the 6545 for the 65 side. There is not an extra gain stage in the SRZ but there are a few differences and the SRZ-65 does seem to be a bit more gainy from other factors.
