I want a Galaxie head... BAD.
I've had a Peavey Classic 50 for the last 2 1/2 years as my only tube amp, and while it's been very reliable, it has a very wide open and flabby low end while sounding very harsh on the top end. I often get accused at band practices of having my wah on at all times... when in reality it's just the amp pumping those ridiculous muddy mids.
I play a lot of church music and the Peavey just isn't cutting it for the stuff I play...
I had the opportunity to play on a Galaxie this past weekend at Guitar Rez in Austin, TX (WONDERFUL people... very friendly, and they actually know what they're talking about - they take PRISTINE care of their gear)... and I gotta say, the Galaxie blew me away. I played on the Maz's, the Monza, Z28, Prescription Jr, Mazerati, and the Carmen Ghia, and the Galaxie had exactly what I was looking for and more... 2 channels, one a BEAUTIFUL Fendery tweed channel, and the other, a very nice, smooth, tight, Fender tweed w/ a nice twist of Marshall tone in there. Just an amazing amp altogether.
I love the controls, and the only beef I had then was the lack of a master volume for the dirty side... but after hearing about the Doc's mod for that, it just made it perfect.
But seeing as how I only got to play on it for about 20 minutes or so... can you peeps offer some of your explanations on how you would describe the Galaxie? Particularly the level of gain offered in the dirty channel and how the new master volume control interacts with it? Does it help clean it up just a tad (that's all I want anyway)? I just want good, gritty rock, with great sustain, not really looking for it to go metal or anything, but I just wanna know exactly how hi-gain we're talking here and how different the 2 channels are here in regards to gain and tone.
I liked starrman's demo vids, but I was hoping I could find out more about the master volume's versatility with the dirty channel... and just how dirty it can get.
