I know we're few in numbers - us SRZ-65 owners - but I'd like to hear about everybody's speaker setup and opinions. I'm putting a Private Jack in my ZBest tonight to go with my V30 and I'm hoping it sounds good. Let's get more SRZ-65 posts here!!!!!
Adios,
Johnny

I have always loved greenbacks with the SRZ 65, but that's just me. Nice reedy English compression, and less efficiant allowing the SRZ to be mastered up a bit and push the EL-34's.

I'm using a Z Best with Vintage 30 and G12H30. Are you swapping out a G12H30 for the Eminence?
I've had mine for a couple of years now, and the speakers are broken in. The G12H30 is definitely the louder and brighter of the two speakers, so I generally mic the Vintage 30 for recording.
Let me know how it turns out for you, and if you're playing anywhere in Chicago in the near future.

I should have probably let the G12H break in before I switched it out. Oh well... I've got the V30 on the bottom and the PJ on top and it sounds good. I'm considering a governor on the bottom but I should probably stop and not let the GAS get me as it usually does. I'm just looking for a little more brightness for my clean tones and I thought the V30 and G12H sounded muddy with my Les Paul. It has helped finally putting the Zbest up vertical though. How are your clean tones? I'm assuming this is why the Doc makes the 6545 but I'll be damned if I'm gonna give up on getting good cleans out of this thing. As you well know, the dirty tones out of this thing are unreal but I want some Gilmourish clean tones too. Tell me more about your experience with yours when you get a chance. As far as playing out anywhere, I wish I could find some players to get something going with but it's harder than you'd think - Texas rock ain't to big up here. Righ now I'm just doing a small acoustic cover thing.
peace,
johnny

I am currently using a G12H and a G12M in my 2x12. I actually have 6545 and find that this is a little boomy on the SRZ-65 side. I am looking at changing these speakers out for a pair of Weber Alnico Thames speakers. More of a Hiwatt kind of sound. I am also going to switch over to 16 ohms. I have heard that using 16 ohms uses the whole output transformer and is supposed to get a better sound. We'll see....I will let you all know how it goes once I get them in. Also on the subject of breaking in a speaker..... on www.celestion.com they give advice on how to break a speaker in 95% in about 15 minutes. I actually does work. Just so you all know, if you are interested. Here is what they say: "How do I break in my speakers? Important Note! Before breaking it in it's advisable to "warm up" the speaker gently for a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum. Break in a speaker with a fat, clean tone: turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain. Use a level that will be quite loud, but not painful in a normal size room. Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half. On your guitar, use the middle pick up position (if your guitar has more than one pick up) and play for 10-15 minutes using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing. This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely. The speaker will continue to mature over the years, but this will get it 95% of the way to tonal perfection in the shortest time."

Johnny,
It is interesting to hear you say that your clean tones aren't bright enough for you. I often find that mine are too brittle.
I'm using a Les Paul as well, a '58 Reissue with 57 Classic pickups. I have the master and the gain both at about 11 o' clock. I'm running that cab vertically. I use the volume control on me guitar to get cleaner tones, and by the time I get a perfectly clean tone on my bridge pickups, there's kind of not enough there.
This really isn't a big deal, because I generally play with a least a little "hair" on my tone, but it's interesting none the less. I guess there a re a lot of other variables to consider too, such as tubes, cables, etc.
Trane,
I really like the Hiwatt-ish characteristics of my SRZ-65. Let us know if you do switch to the Thames, beacuse that might be something I'm willing to get into as well.

I did the switch from 4 ohms parallel to 16 ohms series - it's not too hard just make sure you find instructions on the internet somewhere - i say give it a try, you can always switch it back. I like the way it seemed to make the sound a little more 3d to my ears.... Thanks for the advice guys. I might try juicing the master and gain a little more or looking into new tubes maction and trane - nice idea on the Thames - it's much cheaper than an alnico fane....

I am looking at placing my order in the next week. With build time (9 to 10 days) and shipping it will be a while before they arrive. I will let you all know how it goes. Has anyone else noticed a boomy kind of sound on the SRZ-65 side? I notice it when using my Les Paul on either hte middle or neck position playing open chords or barre chords up around the 7 fret or so.
Thanks

I don't think you'll notice this as much when you move to higher wattage speakers. I notice it sometimes but not as much now that I have a 60 watt V30 in the bottom and a 50 watt Private Jack in the top. I remember a few years ago I owned a '65 VOX AC-50 (which reminds me alot of the 65 by the way) and I played in through a Soldano Cab w/ Celestion Lead 80's on the bottom and V30's on the top - that amp/cab combo SMOKED. I'm beginning to realize that this baby needs room to breathe... at least w/ a 2 X 12. I'd love to hear my 65 through a 4 X 12.... wish I still had that damn cab still....

I placed my order today with Ted Weber for 2 - 12" Alnico Thames speakers. I requested them to be undoped and 8 ohms each. I will let you all know how it goes when they come in. Looking forward to hearing the differences in the speakers and the 16 ohm load rating versus the 8 Ohm Celestion load I have now.

Well, my Weber Alnico Thames speakers came in on Saturday. I installed them in my 2x12 closed back cab and put them through a basic break in procedure. I loved the speakers from the start but hearing them evolve during the break in was great. Even with the bass and mid maxed and treble about 6 1/2 I could hear each string in an open E chord. The articulation and presence of these speakers is phenomenal. I played a gig on Friday with my old set up and then on Sunday (same songs mostly) with the Thames. I noticed an immediate difference. I can use the neck pickup of my Les Paul in any playing position. This is not something I could do with my old celestion set up. I will write more once this week is over and I get to use my new set up with my other two bands. Probably the best speaker I have heard for the sound I was looking for.

I'm currently using a 4x12 wired as a stereo cab with 2 scumbag SA-12M-55's and 2 vintage 30's (on their way out as soon as I can afford to do so). I am using the cab as a 2x12 only plugged in to the scumbag side for now.

Just got a Lead 80 for my Zbest (bottom) and will either keep the Private Jack on top or move the V30 up (currently on bottom). I'll let y'all know how it sounds... I had really good luck a few years back with a Soldano 4X12 cab w/ 80's on bottom and V30's on top. Hope it goes as well with the SRZ as it did w/ my VOX AC50.

Now that I own an SRZ-65 I've decided to get a new cab to go with it. I'm leaning toward a Z-Best cab loaded with two "Greenbacks". Any thoughts on these speakers with an SRZ-65?

Wouldn't a pair of Greenbacks be a little toward the lower end of the scale wattage rating-wise? Probably a sweet sounding speaker, but I don't know that I'd want to push them. No experience here with those being fed by an SRZ-65, though.
My '95 ZBest [ did they even call them that back then?? ] has the Vintage 30s that came in it. I added a set of Ted Weber's Beam Blockers.

yeah, be careful Prowler. 2 GB's would only give you about 50 watts handling power. Now 4GB's in a 4X12 w/ the SRZ would be SWEET... If you like GB's I highly recommend the Eminence Private Jack. Essentially it's a GB copy w/ 50 watts RMS. This would give you 100 Watt handling ability (the SRZ runs around 65 watts so you'd be good). Just my 2,
Johnny

I decided what cab to get for my SRZ. I went wit a Z 4x10 cab. After lots of thinking about cab/speaker combinations & options I realized I wanted MORE of the tone my old 6545 had through the Z 2x10 cab. Since I've never really felt any mojo from 12's the 4x10 was the natural choice for me.
Man, it's going to be a long 6-8 week wait.

After a long wait my Z 4x10 cab is on it's way to me. I'll have it Monday morning. Can't wait to give it a go with my SRZ! Looks like I'm calling in sick.

The Z 4x10 has arrived. I played my SRZ through it for about 5 hours today. Truly an amazing cab! Tight lows. smooth mids & clear articulate highs that are never harsh. I am delighted with how my rig sounds. I'll never, ever, ever, go back to 12's.

Prowler,
I'm glad you like it! I love my SRZ-65 through my Dr. Z 2x10. It really adds a nice a nice mid-range warmth, and the lows are still amazingly big and tight.

The 4x10 is double the tonal fun! The 4x10 isn't too big / heavy either. It's just about perfect. The only way it could be better is if someone else was moving it around for me.
