I just got a used Galixie and I love it but there is a remarkable volume difference from one to two.. almost double. I have two Maz 18's and am used to only 18 watts and even those can get loud enough for most of my gigs. There is going to be an issue for me to use the #two channel live on this amp because of the volume increase. It just doesn't sound good to me until it is at about 9 or 10 oclock on the two volume setting and buy then I am covering my second guitar player with his 50 watt Marshall. This thing is so sweet at 12 oclock but buy then I have cleared the front row. Is this normal? I purchased this used and it has a set of Tung Sol 6L6 , a GT 5U4 and what looks like chinese 12ax7 with a GT12ax7 in the phase inverter position. Please help before my band kills me .

Yep. That is the Galaxie. It is channel switching, but not in the way a Triple Rectifier or a Bogner is- i.e. rhythm (ch. 1), lead (ch. 2)- at least not without another step or two, considering volume is an issue.
I will humbly suggest you either get an attenuator (Air Brake or Bad Cat Leash) or you can get the master volume mod for the hi-gain channel of the Galaxie. This dumps your presence knob (leaving it permanently at noon) and gives you control of the 2nd channel.
The Galaxie is a loud amp- 40 watts- and stage volume is always going to be an issue with non-master volume amps in most smaller to mid-size venues. I know your pain. But if you have the means, look into either of those two options. By the way- congrats on the Galaxie! It is one sweet amp that truly has a combination of two my favorite sounds crammed in there. It is a lot of tweed Fender Super spliced with a bit of Marshall JCM...hmmm...good! Best of luck!

I would suggest the Brakelite - the only time I have been able to open my Galaxie is on bigger outdoor stages and even then it is still loud. I was at first having difficulty with the difference in Volume on Ch 2; but then I changed by approach. One day I just opened up Ch 1 to about 1:30/2 and got my lead and clean tones from that channel via the Volume knob on the guitar. With that in mind when I run Ch 2 at about 10/10:30 it is not a big volume difference more of a tone/gain shift. So maybe think of the channels as different tones as opposed to rhythm vs. lead or clean vs. dirty. I still take quite a few leads on Ch 1 in this setup and only use Ch 2 when I want a bit more gain/sustain. IMHO - I think this was the intent of the Galaxie - open up Ch 1 and go to town (oh yeah don't forget the Brakelite).

The airbrake really helps and one or two clicks on the tone is still heaven.

Thanks guys ...I have ordered the Brake Lite as my first step but like the idea of the master volume mod. Can anyone tell me more about that? As stated....it replaces the "presence" control,(same knob) which will be permanently set at "noon". But....you will have a master vol for channel 2(lead). Cost for the mod is $150 + ship. It's a really cool thing, unless you already know how to drive this mofo. Personally, as I use mine mostly for recording...and can set the two channels up for whatever sound I'm going for..(IF I were using it "live"(a lot)...I "Just might", want the master vol mod) I 'aint givin' up me "presence" control. I use it waaay too much. SOME kind of attenuator, is required w/this amp. Unless you're playing stadiums. Back in the day, I would'nt have even considered using a 45 watt amp. 100 watt, 4 speaker minimum Dad. That was then...............this 'aint. Tone knobs(presence/bass/treble), have a HUGE affect on the overall gain structure of this amp. BOTH channels. Try setting channel 2 @ 10-11 o'clock, & channel 1 @ 1-2 o'clock. Tone stack @ noon to begin with. Dial in your clean/dirty tone on channel 1 using your guitar volume, then Stomp on channel 2 for a mid/gain boost.....(per; JD). This amp is kinda like an instrument, in that you have to "learn" how to play it. TRUST me bruthr....it's IN there.
