How do the two compare? I'm talking about a 70's Super not the reissue. I have always wanted an amp with a ton of headroom and great reverb for some jazzy stuff.

Shortly before I bought the EZG-50 I had the opportunity to play 3 Super Reverb amps, side by side. A 1965 Reissue, a silverface 1967 and a blackface 1965. I used a Grosh ElectraJet Standard with P-90 type pickups and the results:
The reissue sounded kind of good at higher settings, but was thin compared to the others. The 1967 silverface SR had a great tone at 5 with plenty of the classic Fender tone/breakup you think of. But then I plugged in the original 1965 blackface amp. This thing just blew the other amps away. The perfect "cleanish" rhythm guitar tone with lots of thick midrange, but none of the slight "lo-fi" qualities that some older Fender amps exhibit (which can be great too, but not something I really look for out of a Super Reverb).
The only amp that could compete with the 1965 Fender Super Reverb for that kind of sound to me was the EZG-50. It can nail the clean sounds and surpass the SR in semi-dirty/dirty tones. And what a verb! What a sick jazz amp, no doubt. Lots of headroom!

1+ for the EZG. It sounds as good or better doing the old Fender BF tone v/s an old Fender BF.

i think the EZG's sound is more organic and rull,...the SR is a great amp no doubt, but to me sounds more compressed. The SR seems to open up at high volumes but IMO only has a few seet spots, The ezg seems to have more subtle tonalities hidden within the two volume knobs, plus maintanance and parts on an old SR is really high for a gigging amp.

Hey Kingcrimson84, I'm a pround owner of the last year The Blackface Pre CBS era Amps were made! a 67' All original! I wouldnt trade it for nothing! Compared to an EGZ?? I have never had the chance to AB them but If I was gonna be in the Market for a new 6L6 Amp w Reverb The EGZ is Hands down one of the best out there! I'm sure it will be an amp you could pass on to your grandchildren thats just how good all DR Z amps are! and at 50 watts Im sure a good Talent box on the front end would puch it into rock fury!!!

I will mention that there is another low budget 4x10 combo that is often overlooked. The late 60's or early 70's 4x10 Fender Bassman. Not the classic tweed, but the silverface. I have seen these go for under $500. These are sleeper amps that just love pedals and have alot of the sonic DNA of the Super Reverb at a fraction of the cost. Shhh. Don't tell anyone.
I have been thinking of getting one again- sold mine a few years back- to use for practice when I don't want to setup the EZG-50 and a combo. Also, since my EZG is in the shop at the moment, I am jonesing for Fender tone. The Bassman 4x10 is pretty sweet and would get you some of the way there tonally and would be an excellent backup or stereo partner to an EZG or Super.

I've got a 1974 Fender Quad Reverb. Bought it new. I like my EZG-50's sound better. MeZa
