Why no mids knob on the Galaxie? Has anyone gone from a different Dr. Z -- I'm thinking of a Maz because that is what I have -- and missed it? I am thinking of essentially trading my Maz 18 210 for a Galaxie 210 and was curious. Oh, and what about the presence know? Does this act exactly like the cut knob on my Maz?

Let me just say this, the Galaxie is nothing like the Maz. The controls act differently, the amps "feel" different, and the Galaxie has a huge bottom that the Maz does not have. Both are great amps, but you can't really compare them.

I have a Maz Jr NR and Galaxie, both heads and no 10" speakers in the house at the moment. They are most complementary. I highly recommend having both if you can swing it. The Maz is the Mr Versatile of the Dr Z line. It has its own voice, with lots of adjustment available in the tone stack to be that versatile. I am not Mike, nor do I play him on the Internet. But if I could speak for Dr Z, I might say that the less mess you have in the path, the closer to the Tone you are. The Galaxie has less in the path. The Galaxie also has its own voice but it is shaped around the old Fender Tweed sounds. In that regard, I think it hits the mark and does it better. The tone is so rich, I do not miss having it broken down more discretely at all. I would miss the Presence control though. That gets hard wired on the newer, Channel 2 Master Volume mod. It is similar to the Cut control on the Maz, but more. I am not sure I could explain it right now any better than suggesting that it could be relabeled Sparkle. My friend, the Galaxie has some Sparkle. And we have not even mentioned Channel 2 yet.

I have been thinking along the same MAz for Galaxie trade - the 2x channels appeal. The thing is, I always play live, so I don't mess with the tonestack once I've found my sweet spot. So, if we fix the Max on Volume, and Tonestack dimed; MV to taste, Cut to taste, then compare that to the Gal Ch1 (or 2), how does that compare? Does the Gal have an FX Loop? Very curious about this......... Pete

I have had both amps and still currently own a Maz Jr and can tell you that the Maz Jr is no way near a lightweight when it comes to not having enough bottom end. I currently have a Vibroverb with an alnico 15' here right now and the Maz with a G12h30 keeps up to that amp and it's 40 watts and the bass doesn't cave in either. I have had over the past few years 6 different Z's and the Maz Jr is up there with not only the best of the Doc's creations in being the ubiquitous all rounder but also in any other amp maker out there. Someone told me it's the best selling boutique amp in the world, well if that's true it wouldn't surprise me. I have tried many rigs over the past 25 years and this one is hard to beat. As far as the Galaxie goes it is a great blues amp. The first channel has a great clean with a strat/tele that when pushed with a booster can give you that prickly blues tone. The second channel doesn't need any dirt pedal but it's breakup isn't anything like the maz. It's gets this wooly sustaining thing going on. The thing is very tweed like, no mid nob needed and if tweed is your thing then go for it.
