Hello. Currently I am Z-less. Had a Z28 once and I miss it daily. But I think for my next Z the KT45 is what I need. I currently have a Valvetech Hayseed 15 (AC15 clone) and it's cool but has very little headroom especially on the ef86 channel (which is my favorite...god I love EF86's for some reason).
I also have a good attenuator (Ho attenuator, maker of the Ultimate attenuator) and would use that with the KT45 so I can get the KT45 up to that wonderful clean that crunches a bit when you hit hard with a Les Paul.
As for speakers, my favorites with the Hayseed (and the Z28 too) have always been Greenbacks in a closed back cab.
Kerraaaang.

I'm with you on the ef86s. As another Z newbie (not counting an airbrake) I am going to find out about the kt45 over the next few weeks/months/years for myself......... And speakers will be another thing I'll be trialling a lot of. Are you buying blind (like I did), or have you already played one? I've played a route 66 and now the kt45, and I've always been interested in the z28 also (along with the stangray). All the best, and hopefully we'll soon have another newby like myself to keep the kt45 section ticking over

Welcome both of you! The KT-45 is simply stunning. I sold my Hiwatt Custom 50 to buy the KT, I'd not heard one when I ordered it either! I can tell you that the EF86 on the KT is amazing, masses of clean headroom, but when it starts to break up there is nothing like it. Very loud but very addictive! Set all the controls to 3 O'clock and stand well back! Awesome amp!

Hi Darkside,
I know you've got the 410 going now, but what did you think of the weber thames? I'm considering trying a 15" alnico thames (using a 15" alnico bluedog to start with). Once again I'd be buying blind, but for my first alnico speaker, I'm liking the bluedog so far (but have barely played the kt45 yet, mainly my matchless c30 head).
I'm re reading all the old posts, especially settings and tubes, now that I have the amp.

Hi timford, The Weber 12" Thames ceramic is superb. It does a great impression of the old grey Fanes as used by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. I was very happy with them, just had the urge to have Z cabs too so had to sell them to raise the cash! I've not heard the 15", not generally the most popular size for guitar cabs, bass guitars love 15's. Try it before you buy it if possible. The Z 4x10 is an awesome cab for the KT.

Darkside, a quick question-
I know you sold your Hiwatt Custom 50 and the KT-45 has taken its place. Could you compare those amps really quick for me? I am close to jumping on a 70's Hiwatt Custom 50 and I have an attenuator, but I was just wondering what specific differences there are between the two.
With the attenuator and the master volume, it seems like the Hiwatt would actually be more flexible, but maybe not. Any help would be appreciated. Also, I have found the Hiwatt for about $500 less than the KT-45 which of course is a factor...
Oh yeah, I mainly would use either amp with the goal of clean with a good bit of hair (not EZG-50 clean- that would be my 2nd amp in a live rig) sounds for original rock stuff. I play primarily teles and jazzmasters.

The Hiwatt did exactly what I wanted when I got it- loads of clean headroom to take pedals, all od tones from pedals. The KT offers me the same headroom more or less, I never get it anywhere near overdriving on it's own, it's earth shatteringly loud at overdrive levels! The KT just sounded better clean than the Hiwatt, the EF86 front end really does something special to the guitar tone. I know $500 is a lot of cash though. Really depends on what you want it for. I use my KT in my Pink Floyd tribute act, it delivers glorious tone in spades. My advice - Try them both out if possible. If you want a clean platform the Hiwatt is a great choice, if you want the same thing but better - KT-45! If you want stunning overdrive - KT-45!

Thanks for the info.
Yeah, I have been playing on a KT-45 at a Z dealer near me and it is incredible. Just stunning.
But I have been borrowing a friend's 70's Hiwatt and can get quite a deal on it, so I have a feeling I am going to end up buying the Hiwatt. The KT-45 will probably have to wait. But the good news is, the way vintage gear goes up in price means that in a couple years the Hiwatt may have appreciated enough for me to sell it and get the KT-45 without taking a loss!!!
Cheers.
