I have been messing around with my board lately and was wondering..
What have you guys found that works for a Robben Ford type tone?
I use my AC+ on the A side and sometimes add in the B side as well for a bit more gain...
Love the AC+ use the A side set to the max and I use the B side as mild OD or stack it with A for Hi Gain tones its sweet with all my amps.. Specially my Flatstone w/6L6's and my MAz Jr..

I know it has been said that Robben Ford uses a Zendrive with a Twin at times when he is not using a Du@ble amp. So I suppose a ts-9 and a blackface type of amp would get close??? I should disclose that I could not name one song of Robben Ford's but I do know what his tone sounds like.

I am getting to he a big Robben Ford fan the last couple years.... I am surprised you don't know any of his songs he's great!! Robben does use a zendrive.. Only because it was built to replicate his tone lol it was in an issue of premier guitar a few months ago... They had an interview with the guy thr builds them I forget his name of the top of my head..
Just a pet peeve of mine, I love Dr Z amps and think they are amazing but why is it that everyone on here is affraid to say Dumble.... or the D word as most people say or whatever... I know I will never have one and don't want one I am happy with the amps I have... It's just used to describe a sound... Anyway keep them coming....
Does anyone not try for the Robben Ford type tone??

Dumble Dumble Dumble. I do like his music and tone from what I have heard and should actually listen to some albums of his. I wasn't trying to imply anything or call you out on it. If that's what you thought I am sorry.... I guess everyone must have a zendrive for that sound...

Oh I no that I was just messing around too! I think the Jetter gain stage red, an Ethos overdrive, and a Fuchs plush drive maybe to name a few. None of them on the cheaper side though. I had a Zendrive for a while and found it to be a great sounding pedal but just realized that it was not the sound I was going for in the end. If I were to buy another Dumble in box type of pedal again I would probably go back to the Zendrive. They actually sounded best to me with a tele bridge pickup.

The Robben Ford and Larry Carlton thing doesn't seem to be going on over here like it is at the TGP, you might get some better answers over there maybe?

I'm guessing the Sakashta Nopaul guitar and Taku's pickups with coil taps have more than a little to do with his tone.

The guy i gig with, is robben ford incarnate, has his touch and tone, sings like him too, unfortunately...
Every where we go, in the same car, i have to put up with robben ford and horse face. So much so, that i USED to like what he does..
Ive played one of the scariertone overdrive specials, and they certainly sound like the real thing, as far as recordings that is, but have some other decent tones in there as well.

Hre's a left field combo: DGT at about 7 on the treble pickup, Flying Dragon at 12:30, Robin Trower overdrive with drive at about 1:00, tone at 1:00, volume at about 11:00 into a Carmen Ghia with a 12" Red Fang 1x12. And a little bit of delay.

www.garthwebber.com/gear.shtmlThis guy has played with Robben, his brothers, and sounds a lot like Robben. He even loves the Fender RF model, but the link is for the gear so you can see what he uses to get the tone without a Dumbell.

Howdy, I use a Zendrive and a Wampler Ecstasy Drive pedal. I have found that my PRS Custom 22 or my Tele with Barden pickups can get me sort of close with the above mentioned pedals. Robben has some amazing tone. I too would love to check out the Ethos!

The Ecstasy has just taken the Zendrive off my board.
Like some other folks I was finding that I had to change settings on the Zen with different pick up selections (not ideal whilst playing).
Think the Ecstasy can pretty much get me the best of the Zen plus some.

A good CD player...then I pop in one of his CD's, hit play....other than that - it's a Dumble and then to the woodshed for hours and hours of practice

I use a humbucker equipped guitar (current fav is my DGT, or a good Les Paul) straight into a PRS Original Sewell Head to a PRS 2x12 open back (all in paisley).

I have been tweaking lately and working on a couple of his tunes.. I find the AC+ still gets the closest and just as good is the Keeley BD-2 and Katana I recently got from the BST..

I attended one of his clinics in the 90's with about 20 other people. Very intimate. He talked about his rig and was very understated about the dumble. He said it is basically a high powered twin and that was it. No gushing or empahsising anything extraordinary about it.
I think an Ulbrick 12axe is pretty handy for Robben Ford type tones. I know he has one too, don't know if he uses it much or not.

DC here! Lets not forget that Roben Ford's sound is in his hands most of all. Bet he will sound like himself no matter what gear he plays on - He has a special handbuilt guitar he uses - built by a japaneese guitarmaker. Forget his name - at the moment. ( lives in the states I think ) Cheers: Dixiechicken!

The tone for sure is in the hands....
Thank you for the input taswegian.... I think the Dumble fever has not been earned as much as been created... IMHO..
No matter what we have to play through we all sound like ourselves......
I have seen it many times with some friends and instructors i have had.... Specifically one he would play a Deluxe Reverb, Twin or a Classic 30 for gigs most of the time, but would plug into a Line 6 or Crate teaching lessons... Would sound just as good and pretty much the same...

Some thoughts - People have been chasing his tone for years, long before he got his Sakashta Noupaul, so I don't really think thats a big factor in his tone. As far as Dumbles - and I'm not an authority in any way - but each one of those amps is built for the individual player, so in theory each one should be a little different.
"The tone is in his hands" is the reality of it. If you watch his latest instructional DVD's, he's plugged into a Super Reverb, and he sounds just like you would expect him to.
I have a Two Rock Emerald Pro and a Brown Note D'lite 33 - both come close to his tone (sort of). My playing doesn't, but I'm working on it. ;D
In regard to pedals - I started with a Zendrive, then went to a Jetter GSR, and then traded that for a Menatone Howie, which is the "keeper" for me.
I'm a huge RF fan, and was lucky enough to see him three times this past year.
