I think the KT-45 is one of the best amps I've ever owned. That being said, I'm finding it hard to deal with EF86 based amps. There's a certain fizz I end up hearing when recording. I don't use pedals & have 2 killer 2x12 cabs that sound great with all my other amps. Is it the EF86?? I've owned a couple Matchless amps with the EF86 based preamp sections & they produced a similar weird high end tone when recording. I have changed the tubes numerous times, including the EF86.

This would probably be a great question for someone like Myles too.
Maybe post it to him as well, over in the expert section.
As you're probably already aware, he knows tubes, has extensive experience with the amps you've mentioned, and recording.
There should be a lot of other people with ef86 recording experience as well, as so many of the other Dr Z amps use the ef86. With any luck, the good Dr himself may even see your post.
What set up are you/ have you used to record?

Hey dex45, I know exactly what you're talking about in regards to the fizz. I had that problem with me first KT. I took it to my amp guy and had him put in a whole new set of tubes. I do not know an enormous amount about tubes, but I will tell you the fizz went away. Don't know if that helps at all, but I fixed my fizz problem with tube replacement.

Using a 2x12 with 2 G12H30's. And have another 2x12 with an Eminence Governor & V128. Les Paul Jr vos. My other amps are 68 Bassman, Hiwatt Custom 50, SRZ-65, Bandmaster. I've been using the same cabinet for a while now. Changed out tubes a couple times now and still am not able to record with it. I end up using the Bassman or SRZ. The KT-45 sounds amazing in live settings. I may end up parting with it since the SRZ fills my EL34 needs.. I had to move on from my Matchless Clubman for the similar reason.
Thanks for the help....

The KT45 is a very quiet amp. I'd look at the EF86 first and then check if the treble control is cranked all the way up or very high?

Just curious if this ever was resolved. I know about the sound you are talking about (I think) b/c I had something similar with a Matchless amp at a studio I was doing some work in.
