I picked up some JAN 5751's. Replaced the 3 12AX7's. I really like amount of headroom the amp gets now. The tone is a little less harsh in the high end department. Almost takes the amp into Hiwatt land. (but better!) I'm using the amp far more often since the change..
This is still my favorite Z amp of them all.

I replaced all my Preamp tubes with 12AX7's but they are Black Plate RCA 7025 two Sylvania 12AX7 and Jan-Phillips 12AT7 in the Reverb Section! Yes I said Reverb, I have an Original Design SRZ! It took that High end you are talking about Completely out . World of Difference. I used My KT 77's for the first time Gigging. It was good but, Its a bit harder to get those Real sweet Pinch Harmonics that the 34's give, But nice Mid punch like an old Plexi! and lots louder! That I dont need! LOL! I highly recommend what Dex45 did and what I have done it makes a huge tonal difference!

I play a VOS LP Jr & Esquire Tele. Through a 2x12 cab wCelestion G12H30's. And sometimes a 2x12 with an Eminence V128 & Governor. I still love the sound of the SRZ stock. I really like EL34 based amps. I've owned a KT45 which I really liked, but always liked the sound of my Hiwatt Custom 50 & my Plexi 50 heads. So far live it delivers. Still need to record with it some more. I've had the 2x12 cab with the G12H30's for a few years. It also makes the master volume sweep different (more usable). We all know the amp is based on the 2204 & the SRZ will kill any JCM 800. I'm sure most Z amp owners think I'm nuts, but I'm very happy I tried this with the 5751's. I never thought this amp had a Hiwatt or Bassman inside it. Even the A/B with my Bassman the Z has tons more headroom.
I'm staying with for now, but come studio time the 12AX7's are going back in for some tasty Leads!

The SRZ is Very Very! Versitile. It can do semi Clean with that nice Gradual Breakup but it can get really Nasty but stay so articulate, is what I love about it. Gonna put the EL34's back in, The 77's sound awesome but, They are to my ears alot louder, The SRZ doens't need to be any louder. I have found with running the amp Gain right at 12Oclock I can roll guitar volume back and clean up and push with any of my gain boxes with minimal gain settings and be in Pure Rock Heaven! Gives me just enough umph! to get over the band without being overboard! Been using the Direct Drive with the SRZ!!! OMG!!!!! I may end up pulling the BB completely off my Board! Yes Its that good!

There's something about the SRZ that no other amp has. I'm also half tempted to run the amp with just the guitar volume knob & no pedals live. I know it's one of the first amps the Doc created & sometimes just like Rock & Roll bands the first & second record is usually the best.. That being said, I've yet to hear a Z amp that doesn't sound killer..
EL34's deliver..!!

your right those EL34's do deliver !!!! I set my gain at noon as well....and it does clean up fairly well with the volume on the guitar backed off......I have quite a few clean parts I need to play at gigs....and I can get that with the SRZ....but most of the time I have my Keeley Baked mod TS9 on... switching the pups and working the volume pedal......I love that TS + SRZ tone...both full out and backed off...After reading Muzacman02 post on his live set up...I got a hot british tonebone pedal.....great distortion w/ tons of low end......almost like another preamp stage....you can get the SRZ to do over the top metal !!!!!! Total doom!!!...I guess this amp is more than a one trick pony.......Cool to hear about the tonal variations with different preamp tubes...I got to start expermenting....only one problem.....I love my tone now....!!!!!!!

The SRZ LOVES Pedals , the Best yet is the Radial , Glad to see NINER pickup one , it does eveything form Classic Crunch to over the Top Metal! I use it as for over the top stuff and it's huge! Gonna reinstall my 34's The 77's are great but just a lil too much! The SRZ is a Tone Monster you just have to not be affraid to tinker with the knobs and let your ears not EYES! do the work. My TS 808 Keeley was sold a while back but the SRZ loved it, Thats was the only amp that sounded great with it so I passed it on!

Thanks to all who made this 5751 suggestion. Certainly gives the SRZ a vintage quality. I've tried eq's, ods, boosts, etc..., but hated what they did to the SRZ. For me with the 5751's, this is my holy grail. Guitar-Cord-SRZ, and yeah an Airbrake.

I may have to give them a try even though I have RCA Black Plate 12ax7's and 7025's They really took that High Freq sizzle off the top just like you said, I'm no amp tech but , I beleive that the Pre section tubes sets the path for Great Tone!
