So I went to my local Z dealer today and tried a Brakelite out, but we just plugged it in and left it on top of the amp it wasn't mounted to anything.
It sounded good, and I didn't notice much tonal difference though the fullness of the bass seemed to go away which I attributed to not working the speakers as hard.
My question is, Would it have sounded different if the Brake lite was mounted? I remember reading that it needed to be mounted, but was curios about tonal/sound differences mounted or not. Thanks.

No, the sound difference is more to do with the Fletcher-Munson effect than anything else. You can Google it, but the bottom line is our ears don't hear things linearly. In other words, as volume decreases, we hear bass much less than mids and highs. Go look at this thread to see what I mean.

Thanks Steve, that totally makes sense now.

The recommendation to mount it is only because it's not built with a "full" enclosure like the standard Airbrake, so mounting it protects the innards from outside stuff.
