Pentode or Triode? Tone stack? Channel 1 or 2? (I'm still trolling for a deal, although I've got my eye on one now, so it won't be long!)

My favorite right now-
Dr. Z Galaxie: "Lead" channel @ 12 o'clock, "Clean" channel @ 2 o'clock bass @ 11 o'clock, mids @ 12 o'clock, highs @ 2 o'clock Dr. Z Z-Best 2x12 cabinet
The clean channel has some nice grit in it, but can easily churn out clean tones with adjustment to picking attack. The lead channel just rips!

Usually have mine on Triode. Ch1 vol @ 11 o'clock Ch2 vol @ 10:30 Bass @ 4 o'clock Treble maxed Presence maxed 1x12 Airbrake 2 click
Best thing about this amp IMHO. Let me rephrase: Another great thing about this amp is the bass pot. Like the old tweed Super or low powered Twin, the bass control does something unique. Try maxing the bass control and play (very bassy, cuts the mids), then turn it back until the mids come back in. Super cool and very full sounding. That's how I find my bass/mid tone for this amp.
Wonder what kind of pot it is? Linear or what?

always Pentode - not sure why but it seems to be rounder sounding than triode. Ch1 vol @ 1:00 Ch2 vol @ 11:30 Bass - noonish depending on speaker cab Treble - noonish depending on speaker cab Presence - noonish depending on speaker cab Airbrake 0 to 2 clicks

Sorry, I forgot to mention- I use it in the pentode setting. It seems to handle my various fuzz and distortion boxes better than the triode mode. Only in a subtle, but slightly better way to my ears. Also, lately I have been cranking the Presence to about 2:00.

I also like to 'set' mine on my Z-Best (8 ohm) for 3x12 bliss.

I also like to 'set' mine on my Z-Best (8 ohm) for 3x12 bliss. Nice! While I have not tried that particular setting, I do know that 'setting' on the Z 210 is a sweeet way to share some sound ;D cheers always, eh Joel

I need to try the Pentode setting. Why do most of you like the Pentode better than the triode setting? "Rounder" comments make an interesting case.

Less sag and break up in Pentode mode. I also use a SS rectifier.

Rounder to me means big fat bold tone coming from the lower strings. I visualize a grand piano bass string that vibrates in a huge circle as opposed to a smaller string the vibrates in a smaller circle. I know that strings don't vibrate in a perfect circle but I like the sound of the low end strings hammering out big fat tones like a grand piano. The pentode setting seems to have more bottom end clarity for big fat round notes.

So after a few months with this baby, new hot preamp JJs, through a 2x10 gold, these are my favorites today with an american strat with noiseless sumarians:
Presence 12:00 Base and treble about 11:00 (sometimes higher works too) V2 2:00 v1 3:00 Pentode
Guitar volume 5-7 Guitar tone 4-8 Neck pup
This amp freakin' screams, articulate, grit, clean, sick overdrive, complex harmonics, fingertips or pick... pure kick A** tones!

Hey guys, I'm happy to say that I just got my galaxie in today. It sounds awesome, though it's just crazy loud... like absolutely insane.
I have a few questions for you... I was having trouble dialing the eq the way I wanted. I could hardly get the volume 2 up at all to see what drive it had to offer, I keep hearing that it just screams and I'm excited for that, but holy beard of Lincoln that thing gets LOUD if you turn it up at all. At lower volumes i noticed the drive had a bit of plasticy buzz on top is that normal or does it fill out as it gets cranked? So... 1. You guys would recommend a Dr. Z attenuator? Which one? 2. How do you guys dial in your sound? Form what listening angle? Straight on front and center, no hiding or what? Maybe you guys could give me a lesson on where to listen from, because my chronic problem is that from off at an angle I can get most of the amps Ive dealt with to sound how i want, but dead on... where any mic would be... not so much. There is always way too much piercing and high end action and then when I turn that "pierce" down its just dead.
Help me out. Thanks, Ethan
