so I travelled up to Wilcutt's and tried out a JAZ.
i had thought it was going to be my dream amp, instead it was another Z amp that i really like but dont absolutely need. IT IS an amazing amp nonetheless.
anyways, i was wondering if everyone has the problem that the amp i tried had, which is a decent increase in noise with the reverb on. i know that tube reverb usually has some noise but this was quite a bit. i tried out an EZG-50 a little while ago and the reverb was fine in it.
also, that tube tremolo is AMAZING

Maybe a tube needed to be re-seated or something. Mine is very quiet. That Reverb is a serious reverb and that tremolo with the verb brings the swamp to you!
Another thing... in music stores of it was on top or close to another powered up amp, it could pick up the RF.

it was a combo, no other amps were on in the room. I figured a tube problem but i just wanted to make sure. the guys in the Boutique division of the store werent worried about it and acted like they wanted me out of there.
it was only noisey when the reverb was on. is reverb circuitry more likely to pick up RF than the amp altogether?

Mine had a reverb issue that I could not fix;I had to send it back to Z for a check-up. It seems to work fine now.

I finally got to try out the Jaz yesterday, and I found the reverb just bad in general. Maybe it was that particular amp, but there was just way too much reverb. Very "soupy" is what the guy at the store was saying.
My Maz Jr made me love reverb and now I use it all the time between 9-11 o'clock, but this was basically unusable. I set the knob almost at zero (right where it starts to be audible) and it was already too much. Anything more was crazy.
Other than that though, it's a great amp. Really nice thick sound and I could actually turn up the treble quite a bit before it got shrill (in Strat bridge for example). I guess the 2x10s really help focus the low end.
Plus that was the first time I'd been able to try the Brake-lite, and that was interesting. The low end was still there even at the ridiculous quiet levels. Also I am addicted to tremolo in general, so that's sweet to finally get from Z.

The comments about the reverb are quite surprising. I wonder if there was an issue with that amp or reverb tube? The Jaz 20/40 Combo is high on my next "Z" Amp to try. But for me, if the reverb sucks, that would be a deal killer since I rely on good 'verb for my solo gigs. (And no room on my pedal board for even one more pedal.)

The reverb in mine is quiet. It's a head. Try another tube for starters.
The reverb is not a MAZ style verb. This is more of a surf verb. It's a serious reverb for lack of a better word. I like it, but it's much different sounding than the MAZ.

bluzman is right. it is a completely different reverb. it is meant to be heard and not just compliment the amp, but there are also great lower level reverb sounds in it.
i never said that the reverb was bad, in fact i liked the reverb alot. i just wanted to make sure that it was probably the tubes or bad room power. but even with the hiss the amp sounded amazing.

My Jaz amp is quiet with the verb on and sounds great!

My verb gets noisy at the 10 o'clock spot and increasingly gets noisier from there. I just got it today and think it is a non-production issue and maybe a shipping one.
Any suggestions on how I could troubleshoot it?

I'm in the same boat ... just got my Jaz head and the reverb has a "single coil" buzz, which increases as you dial past 10. It's non-existent when the reverb is off. Any clue on this issue? Thanks.

hi! check the footswitch. when you unplug it ,does the hum go away?? if so, resolder it or replace it. It almost acted like an antenna. when i moved it around the noise was changing. i resoldered it and solved the problem but then the problem reappeared so i replaced it. generally you don t get noiz if you have brake lite on 1 and the half power switch on. this way the amp is still killer and ULTRA quiet. For live situations the hum isn t audible any way... please do tell us what you find out! thanks!

I played a Jaz combo this weekend. 2x10 Combo. Killer sounding amp. Two things I noticed. The Reverb seems to go from zero to a LOT in a very short throw on the knob. I personally loved the sound of the reverb, but if I wanted just a subtle amount, it might be hard to dial in.
The other thing I noticed was the tremolo speed does not go slow enough for my personal taste. The sound and tone of the tremolo is stunning. maybe the best I've ever heard. But I like that ability to get a very slow trem speed and the lowest speed setting was still a bit too fast for me. I'd like to see more variance. Slower at the low end of the knob would make it perfect.
