Great service from Z and Mass Street Music: A couple of weeks ago I bought a Route 66 from Mass Street Music and when it arrived it was dropped on the corner by FedEx and seriously damaged, transformers were pulled away from the chassis at 45 degrees, broken tubes, bent chassis, etc. The amp according to Mass Street actually worked even after the accident, a testament to how well they are built. Anyway, most companies would have likely waffled on getting the situation resolved.
Mass Street immediately took the amp back, worked with me to file the FedEx claim for damage, and Dr. Z sent out a new one lickety split. The second amp arrived safely and sounds great. Amazing service from Chris and Grant from Mass Street and from Dr. Z. I don't know if there were extra 66s lying around or if the good Dr. made a replacement then and there, but regardless I was very impressed all the way around and can recommend both companies wholeheartedly. I am enjoying my Route 66 immensely and thank all involved publicly...you guys rock- D

I agree about Mass Street. Chris does a great job on the high end gear. I go there about once a month if for no other reason than to talk guitars and amps. Easily the best new equipment store anywhere near Kansas City. Check their website www.massstreetmusic.com

Hey guys, thanks for the props! You're making us blush! Just a heads up for anybody wanting a 66...The amp that Dewey received damaged will becoming available shortly. Unfortunately, FedEx is denying our claim!! We shipped it in Z's original carton and they say it was "improperly" packed!! ARRGH!! I fought with them and they won't respond...So...Like Dewey said, we tried it with new tubes and it works perfectly. I have it at our amp tech (QTS in Eudora, great guys!) to straighten out the trannies and to put new KT66's in it. Once its finished, we will be selling it at cost + repair fees to recover our loss. Cosmetically, its perfect; Blonde Tolex, brown grille, cream logo and bone piping. And electronically, it checks out great. Should be a steal for anyone wanting a new 66, at a used price. Hey Chris- I just got the letter from FedEx yesterday - BS excuse in my opinion. Sorry for the hassle on your end, they clearly dropped it and I am sure that these sort of challenges come up all the time and this is the type of answer that leaves them out of bancruptcy. I am sure that with the repair the 66 will be like new.
The replacement sounds awesome. I have been playing it quite a lot and am still very glad that I bought it. I was a little apprehensive at first since I have an 89 Marshall Bluesbreaker with serious mods and THE tone (done by yours truly-without electrocuting myself-over the winter as a project - carbon comp resistors, original circuit and filtering, Sozo caps, mercury magnetic transformers, and a speaker upgrade to 1 Weber blue dog alnico 30W and a G12H30). Sounds a lot like a Germino classic 45 is the only way I can describe it but with some of the Vox chime - totally different than when it I first bought it. Anyway, I thought it would be similar in tone but it really isn't. There is a fatness throughout the Z and a smoother transition to overdrive (with the Marshall its wooly fairly quickly). The bass is way there and is tight. Very swampy blues tone to be had, especially with a little pedal action like a Real Tube coupled with a Fatboost. So nice with a Strat. My other amp is an old Ampeg VT-40 which was recently redone by Todd Sharp at Nashville Amplifier Service and is about as fat a sound as you can get yet is Fenderish, the 66 is on that level of fatness. Upgrading speakers on that one soon should even improve the sound. Todd's work is awesome BTW. Really both amps work so well with single coils its pretty amazing, makes my old Super Reverb I recently sold sound anemic by comparison. So we now have the amp trifecta. I only wish I didn't suck as a player...
So the Route 66 rules - I have to say that I like it better than my Carmen Ghia (sold to finance the 66 - she who must be obeyed had a role in that one...'Why do you need more than one amp??'). The Ghia is a great great amp, and really moved me with a semihollowbody guitar when cranked. If I can afford it in a year or so after the heat dies down and my marriage is ok I'll try to get another one. But with Strats I think I was looking for less chime and more girth in tone and this is it. I'll likely run them in a multiamp setup since they each add something differently, and with the VT-40 (4x10) running w/ an extension cabinet (2x12) it's like God talking when they all are fired up simultaneously. Yeah my neighbors are cool and well educated in tone....
Anyway, back to work - Thanks again and I am sorry for all of the trouble with FedEx. Would have loved it if the first one made it though. If I had the cash I'd buy that one as a spare! Take it easy,
D

UPS stands for United Package Smashers. Is FedEx jealous?
