drzamplifiers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=rxjr&action=display&thread=11999When I first bought my Rx Jr a year ago I went thru all the threads to see what others had done before me to see what I might try. I saw Curt's thread on the 5751's and since I happen to have those tubes I tried that set up and sure 'nuff, I loved it and haven't changed it. But last night I read a post by Myles from way back where he will put a long plate JJ803S in V3. Well I just happened to have one of those I got from Mike at KCA (his 9 dollar tax blow out still in effect I think) and it added just a bit more hair or grit to my settings - almost like a mild OD. Those little glorious finds are wonderful. This is the last weekend of playing out at the fair and I'm looking forward to my new tone. Hopefully it will sound great turned up, not just pushed at bedroom level

I should probably retube my Jr. I haven't done it yet. I'm guessing just the power tubes and preamp tubes for now. I never really know when you suppose to change them. I may have to try the long plate for the fun of it. Thanks for the post.

I had about a year and a half of gigs on them but I don't think I got 300 hours. The 12AX7s generally last quite a bit longer. I don't no what the expectation is for the EF86 (V2).

Seems like the EF86 goes for a while as well because it NOS. I guess I could ask Myles.

well I know the NOS EF86 lasts quite a bit longer than the newer ones. I've also noticed that they go microphonic faster in a combo just due to the pounding they get from the speaker. I switched strictly to heads and that was one of the main reasons. Then again that's just preference I know that combos have been around forever I just didn't want to torture my tubes with high volume rattling and speaker pressures any more than I had to.

So do I want "balanced triodes" or "standard test" tubes? I was just about to place and order and figured I better figure out what that means before pulling the trigger.

The only 12AX7 that needs to be balanced is th one that is used in the phase inverter position. It is most likely the one closest to the power tubes (EL 84s).

Thanks fastfrets. I'm guessing that's V3.

Just placed an order with KCA. Looking forward to updating my Jr. Hope to bring back some of the sparkle that seems to be lost on old power tubes.

Just got them today. I followed your advice and got a 5751 and one of those $9 long plate JJ803S. My guitar is in the shop so I haven't had a chance to mess with stuff yet. I'll let you know as soon as I can.

i just tried the same thing this morning with my maz, i replaced a jj goldpin 803 with a phillips 5751 , the amp to me lost some of its chime and edge to my ear. kinda dull sounding maybe ,left it in for about 20 mins of playing then changed back . like it much better now. how much would it help if there was one of these in the v2? i have a gold pin in the v5 pi and a jj rectifier also. the v2 and reverb tubes are stiil stock
thanks, john
